Hey there Alfred,
I don't know if there is a way of stopping it dead but there is a way to lesson it. I have dealt with many people who were having them and I used to tell them about the breathing exercises because I also have them but they say it never works and I asked myself how possible is that since it works for me? Lately I found out why. Can you do physical exercise once a year when you feel fat and then stop? It won't work, logic will tell you that you have to make it a lifestyle in order to get the benefits. I do them everyday Alfred at a specific time even when I don't have panic attacks. There is an app in playstore with different partens and I do mostly the pattern for depression and you won't believe that even when the panic attack kicks in, it is never the same because my heart is stronger now. When a person now asks me to help them with panic attacks I don't respond anymore because most of the time we humans wants easy solutions and there are no easy solutions anywhere. We need to stick to what works for us. I am sure there are many ways to lesson them but I am also sure that consistency is the key. I hope you also look into them as well. The app I use, you just put earphones on ur ears and listen to a voice telling you to breath in and out and counts the seconds themselves while I am sitting on sofa watching my favorite programs.
Hi zoom, I like your new picture. And I will go ahead and download the app right now. I’m always looking forward to your helpful replies.
I hope you are doing well
I am doing well, thank you very much. I initially wanted to put my picture but the rules scared me a bit but I realised that it harmless and I have made many friends who have their pics on and I know them and it is not fair on them to speak to a robot😂, so I was like, why not. I am happy you are doing well. Take care
Hey! Here’s a few tactile things you can do in the moment- (just prepare to have these things on hand when you can)
-Try putting an ice cube on your neck or wrist.
-sniff peppermint oil (I keep a stick in my car for panic attacks while driving)
-suck on a lemon.
I hear a lot of people suggest breathing techniques- box breathing, 4’s etc but I’ll be honest- for me in the middle of a panic attack- focusing on my breath only exasperates the panic attack.
But by all means try it for yourself!
Panic sucks- it’s been almost four years since my first panic attack-
So even with all that practice of riding the wave, it can still be a challenge
So piggybacking on what the previous poster said...
there is no way to stop it DEAD in your tracks. It’s something we have to live with. We are stronger than our panic but that doesn’t mean it will go away. Ever. Fighting it will only make it worse, so these tips I presented above are only to help you deal with the panic in the moment.
You have to just experience your panic attack and breathe through it. Fighting it makes it worse. I think about it like labor contractions. Panic comes in waves but there is relief in between each “contraction.” During “contractions” breathe deeply and slowly. Relax one set of muscles at a time. Work with your body not against it.
Yoga, massage, and meditation are good for decreasing anxiety overall.
Thank you guys for all your wonderful replies I do appreciate it
I know our ideas are much easier said than done! We’re here in the trenches with you. I’m learning that I’m in low-key panic attack mode almost every waking minute. (In neurofeedback, my beta waves start out really high each time even when I feel fine. My muscles are always tense...even when I’m cheerful and chatting.)
