sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

This is a GI issue, but more serious and more difficult to deal with than IBS. It would be so nice to have a site for SIBO. It is diagnosed by breath test.

The breath test must be "interpreted" by a gastroenterologist. It is not black & white.

I am familiar with s bolardii. My internist recommends it, however, my gastroenterologist does not.

Yr gastroenterologist doesn't recommend it ( - for you, or) generally ?

Were any reasons given ? Would appreciate that info - does seem to be a well tolerated, beneficial-seeming supplement for many ( - but not all !).

My understanding is, s boulardii cld well be helpful in cases where inflammation & evidence of yeast/fungus ( - e.g. candida)-induced symptoms are present. There may be other cues pointing to its therapeutic benefit.

SIBO is mentioned in R Chutkan's "The Microbiome Soln" p68-69. Re. using a broad spectrum antibiotic like rifaximin, she states:

"The result is an amelioration followed by relapse a few months later".

From the general principles she outlines therein, her conclusion seems logical & acceptable. May be worth consider her views further ?

I have not had a SIBO relapse and my dietician indicates that many/most people are successfully treated. I agree that s boulardii is well tolerated and I did take it quite a while ago after an e coli infection. I had no problems with it. I see the gastroenterologist in mid May and I will ask him about s boulardii. He generally recommends a probiotic called Align. I will let you know what he says & I will take a look at the book you mention. Thanks. 😀

I unfortunately had to take refaxemin again and am just finished with it. He prefers Align probiotics and does not recommend s. boulardii. Hope this helps.
