Where is the humanity?

Tonight, I just read a story about Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman, both of whom committed suicide due to sexual assault and bullying. Their documentary is on Netflix. I want to take the time and dedicate this to those who have been in similar places as them.

Audrie was only 15 years of age when she was assaulted by three young boys. They touched her and videotaped the assault. She came to school and people already knew what was done. Eight days later, she hung herself.

Daisy was 14 years of age when she was raped by a 19 year old while another videotaped the assault at a party. When they wrong done, they dropped her off outside of her house in a t-shirt and yoga pants in subfreezing temp for 3 hours. Video was never found and felony cases were dropped due to "political pressure." He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment . Although admitted to having sex, he claimed it was "consensual" and didn't serve time. His grandfather was the state representative and served 32 as a state trooper. No time was served. She was bullied continuously online and slut shamed throughout high school and even after. Daisy attempted suicide twice before before establishing SafeBAE, a nonprofit dedicated to help end sexual assaults in middle and high school. But what was done to her never left her thoughts and she was found dead yesterday.

I never met either of them or know them personally but when I read this story, it broke my heart and left me hopeless. Sending my love and prayers to the families. I know what it's like to lose someone to suicide and the feeling is terrible. But I also know what it's like to be on the other side, wanting the pain and memories to stop, even for a quiet moment. Daisy fought continuously until she couldn't.
