The Best Part of Being Human

We have all been thru some troubling times. It has been nerve wracking to say the least. Our futures were so unsure. We all felt so insecure as to what would happen next. But here we are almost out of the dark tunnel. There now vaccines for everyone. We're not there yet but we will be soon.

I truly believe that there is a silver lining to everything no matter how dark. I've seen remarkable things this past year. In my town we have developed something called "Porch Fairies". People will go around in the middle of the night & leave food on the porches of people they know are struggling. Its all anonymous. No one is taking credit for it. It is done out of a sense of compassion & community. God bless us all.

Others have stepped up with volunteering all kinds of things. Driving to doctor appt, shopping, etc. You can even sign up for a phone service where someone calls you everyday to see how you are. If you just want to talk they will talk and listen. If you need anything they will help you get it. Again these people are all volunteers.

And there is this group. A bunch of people with no reason to help each other than a shared understanding of pain, fear, & loneliness. Here you will find that the more you help each other the better things will get for you.

When things are at their worst human beings are at their best. I hope we never forget that.

My experiences of people and behaviour during lockdown have been mixed. Near the start and at the middle was met with the most appalling behaviour by people who should know better.

However that has been mitigated lately by two examples of goodness, one from a quite unexpected source.

This group has indeed been a saving grace for many of us.

Oneonta, NY is truly an amazing town. I love it here. Would never want to live anywhere else. Oneonta is both a college town and a resort community surrounded by farms mostly dairy but crops as well as other livestock. You are allowed to keep chickens in town. Every Thursday is Farmer's Market in the city square. They accept food stamps. Covid has hit this area very hard. No college no tourists.

I live in a small mountain community. Perhaps 30 of us. All of varying ages and abilities. We were tight knight before COVID, even more so now.

We look out for one another. I get called or visited several times a week for well being checks and I in turn do the same for others here.

For myself, I find I've saved money by not running " off the Hill " on a whim.

Basically lots of love and support and no one is left out of the loop

Must be a country thing. Oneonta refers to itself as a city. But when schools in session we top out at 25,000. Not a hamlet but certainly not a city either. Small town feel everywhere except MacDonald's. lol

Could be a"Country" thing. If you consider the mountains of Southern California "country"😃😉

Population 30 I consider country

LOL naw, just mountain folk.. and there's nothing simple about us. We're not incorporated . That would involve a whole raft of crap we want to avoid.

The two closest towns to me are Anza pop 7500 and Idyllwild pop"around" 3500
