I have to say I usually don't get into reading too much about someones recommendations for guru's, or the latest craze but this sites definitions of 7 different kinds of depression blew me away. It was spot on. It's well worth reading. I posted a small bit, but I don't agree with a lot of what the site offers as solutions, take what you need and leave the rest:

It is not uncommon for depression to be misdiagnosed for other mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder) or for other conditions like ADD/ADHD or even dementia. Getting the wrong diagnosis and the wrong treatment can make your symptoms worse and keep you in a downward spiral.

Traditional treatment with antidepressants doesn’t always work either. Since the launch of Prozac, antidepressant use in the U.S. has increased 400%, and more than 1 in 10 Americans now takes one. But over half of depressed patients don’t get better after taking antidepressant medication.

“The unfortunate reality is that current medications help too few people to get better and very few people to get well.” —Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute for Mental Health

Part of the problem is that traditional psychiatry typically takes a one-size-fits-all approach to diagnosis and treatment. But depression isn’t a simple or single disorder. Giving everybody the same treatment will never work.

Do you have problems with attention and focus? You (and many traditional healthcare professionals) might assume you have ADD/ADHD, but these symptoms could stem from a variety of other causes, such as underlying Lyme disease, past head trauma, or even gut dysfunction.

Are you filled with sadness and fatigue? It could be due to depression, or it could be a sign of a hormonal imbalance.

Before you start taking Prozac or some other antidepressant, isn’t it better to find out if what you really need is progesterone? No one will ever have a Prozac deficiency, but you could definitely have a progesterone deficiency. Progesterone imbalances have been linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and balancing hormonal levels has been found to alleviate these symptoms.

Why would you ever want to take a medication or treatment you don’t need?

I guess we can find fault with every kind of theory or therapy....the earth is round or flat kind of thing...I read the criticism and agree that some of the sites claims are BS to me, but the definitions of depression were what interested me, this is a comment from the 'Quack' site:

‘I don’t doubt that many patients who visit the Amen Clinics are helped. The key question, however, is whether or not SPECT scanning is justifiable for most of them. I, personally, would not undergo the test at Dr. Amen’s clinic even if it were free. In my opinion, based on current knowledge, the possibility of harm outweighs any potential benefit. Pictures showing that “this is your brain on drugs” may impress some people, but I am far more impressed by quantifiable data (such as tests of mental performance) and clinical consequences (such as improved behavior) than by nonspecific pictures of “holes” in the brain.’

....What I was impressed with was the fact that this webpage defined types of depression in a very specific way that I had found very interesting. There is no one size fits all when it comes to the types of depression. As well as the fact that not all depression is caused by the same factors...another truth. Finding out if there are extenuating physical issues as well as emotional rings true. I don't care about the brain scan stuff....and if this is thought to be voodoo science by some which maybe it is, so can be said the same thing about taking SSRI's or therapy....I say whatever works for you, and leave the rest. I personally don’t see any benefit from the scanning other than seeing what abnormalities there might be. But some of the other treatments are also used by many clinics in dealing with depression and anxiety.
