"If you are reading this book because your nerves are in a bad way you are the very person for who it has been written and I shall therefore talk directly to you as if you were sitting beside me.
"It will not be difficult for you to read this book: it is about you and your nerves, and for this reason you will read it with interest, whereas to read an ordinary book may seem an impossibility.
"The strength to recover is within you, once you are shown the way, I assure you of this. Each of us has unsuspected power to accomplish what we demand of ourselves. You are no exception. I have no illusions about you: I am not writing this book for the rare brave people, but for you, probably a sick, suffering, ordinary human being with no more courage than the rest of us."

Hello. Jeff1943,. I couldn't help noticing that book title! "Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Dr. Claire Weekes . I almost jumped out of my seat! Way back in either 1986 or 1987 that was the very first self-help book i read and the Beginning of my very long journey to recovery,. It just brought me right back to that time. There was no smart phones for researching ANYTHING,. No Google, i didn't even have access to a desktop Pc Lol ! Now that i look so far back, i wonder how i ever made it through it all? Taking into consideration that the resources back then was strictly self-help books. I believe she had a follow-up book called "More Help for Your Nerves"?? I believe the first book was white, soft-cover with a multi-color title or just black wording on it? Back in 1987 i had PTSD from years of physical and verbal abuse from my dad back in the mid 70's, in 1987 they had no name for this disorder, it wasn't heard of in the psychology world or the general public. I didn't know what was wrong with me. Anxiety and "nerve" disorders was all new to me,. Now i can write my own book on the subject. I can honestly say that i didn't fully recover from anxiety, to panic attacks,to social phobia, and ultimately to agoraphobia until 1996! A solid 10 years, and 10 years back to 1976 under my dads abuse until 1984 when i was just starting High School. Man, what a trip that was.
I am glad that you recovered eventually, yes recovery can be a long journey. The title you mention "Hope and help for your nerves" is of course the u.s. title fir the same book. And you're right, Weekes went on to write 4 more books in the subject.
