Why is depression still a stigma?

Depression
This is something I ask myself every day. And every day I work on telling my truth so that I can be a part of a community that is strong enough to understand that a lot of people don't believe in pain they can't see. This is so sad to me because I believe healing would be much easier in a world where people care about their mental health just as much as they care about their physical health. I hope that day by day we can all share little bits and pieces of what we experience to others, so they can become more educated on a matter they don't understand. Unfortunately, my entire immediate family believes that being depressed, anxious, or having mood disorders, can disappear, if you try hard enough to rid yourself of them. They also treat me like an addict, as opposed to understanding that risky and impulsive behavior is a part of my personality and mood disorders. They want me to get help for alcohol (which hasn't been a problem for me for about 6 months now) instead of the cognitive help I am wanting to receive. I am (as well as the rest of us) hugely impacted by this. It's almost impossible to tackle something that everyone is telling you, doesn't exist. I hope little by little we can change this and allow it to become a conversation that is had in every household. Everyone and anyone who is struggling needs to know it is okay to ask for help and that it is not a weakness or an excuse. Thank you for your post. Really makes me think deeply every time I realize the stigma isn't going away.
I understand, I don’t think many people understand depression unfortunately. There is still a stigma and the perception of “it’s a phase, you will get over it”
It’s sad to be treated or seen that way by the people you love. My ex just walked out of my life and it broke me more. That’s the thing about life, it teaches us tough lessons. You can always talk to me. (:
