They were called ‘Wisewomen’ and not termed witches until the great Inquisition deemed healers and herbalists and midwifes heretics in the 12th century, they were not spell casters and ritualistic, although superstitions prevailed.... Witches today use Wicca which is their religion. Wisewomen, Bone setters, and Cunning men were the doctors of their day and every village and shire revered them and welcomed them. Most hedge witches today use some ritual, but are mostly herbalists and believe in nature as the life giver. Wisewomen today are still herbalists and midwifes still.
