Fish bone anxiety

Hi. I posted last week. I have had sinus infection and at the tail end now after a month. 2 weeks ago I think I swallowed a fish bone. With all the phlegm and such like I went into a major panic attack. Anyway, I have barely eaten although am hungry and have lost about 9 pounds in just over 2 weeks. I am managing porridge and soup but even that can cause panic (leek soup was awful). The pain is in my throat.

I had camera down through my nose on Wed and 2 drs had a look and cannot see a bone nor a scratch. There is still phlegm there from sinus infection. They made the mistake of telling me that sometimes bones aren't seen. You would think that having two doctors tell me i am ok would help but it hasn't.

Please help. X

If you had something big lodged in your stomach the tests would have picked it up. You would also be in pain. A fishbone is very small and it should have just passed through your body and out very quickly.

So stop worrying about it please and eat normally. Not eating will kill you a lot sooner than a fishbone will trust me. I have swallowed many a fish bone in my life and it's never caused any problems. x

Thank you. It's actually my throat where I have discomfort. Everytime I eat I feel a bit of discomfort then I feel my throat is tightening. Just had a bit of scrambled egg and earlier some porridge.

That's anxiety and not a fish bone. x

Sounds like drainage related to the sinus infection/globus sensation. The globus sensation can make it feel like we cannot breathe/eat too great and feels like you have a tennis ball stuck down your throat (like a lump). It usually goes away when stress/anxiety have subsided. Agreed with hypercat54. Remember anxiety is causing your muscles in your throat to tighten (globus sensation). I would try to eat some stomach friendly foods (basically bland stuff) that won't encourage mucus production, hydrate plenty, and work on any sort of coping skills (mindfulness, meditation, and breathing). Once you're able to calm down a bit, I would hope the throat feeling dissipates. It could take a few days as I used to have this problem due to GERD and anxiety combining. Best of luck and I hope you feel better ASAP!

Thank you for your kind reply. I am ok with soup as long as nothing too lumpy so will make some later. It has been a horrible time and food is usually a massive pleasure for me so has been tricky. I hope that you are well and thank you for your kindness. Xx

You bet, always glad to help :) If this doesn't go away and you have issues with acid reflux, after thinking more, it might be worth visiting a gastroenterologist. Sometimes with anxiety and the additional stress from it, the esophagus can get inflamed a bit. Endoscopy is the main course of action if they can't see anything obvious. Using a scope, they can take a look and even use a "balloon" tool to expand any parts of your esophagus that may have restricted from irritation or otherwise. Just another thing that popped in my head....and it shouldn't be life threatening as much as it's just pure irritating. Wishing you the best, take care for now!
