Rain...

I enjoy the rain...it helps settles my mind and provides a pleasant sound that drains out the other noises. The nights are long....music helps as well. What else can I do to get through the night?

I also have trouble falling and staying asleep and I wish I had a good answer for you. I did download an app on the play store called "love the rain" by Zodiac Entertainment . It has different nature sounds with rain, thunder, frogs, birds, etc. I use it a lot at times.

Yea I love those sounds. Just wanna keep mind busy so I dont dwell on other things.

Nights tend to be the worst for me. For me, reading a long book helps. It keeps my mind active without waking me up like being on my cell phone or laptop or tv does. I’ll also do the “name five things I can see, four things I can hear, etc” to help switch my mind to the present. I hope your nights get better.

Thank you, I'll definitely try that.

Can you please explain the name 5 things, etc. Suggestion. I've not heard of it and may find it useful. Thsnk you!

in reply toAll_alone

Sure. By the time I’m done doing these things, I’m calmer, out of my head, more in touch with my present reality, and better able handle whatever comes next. I’ve found that I can do this anywhere without anyone knowing that I’m doing it.

Here’s what my therapist taught me to do:

1 - Look around me and name five colors I can see

2 - Listen and name four things I can hear

3 - Touch three things around me and name each

4 - Breathe slowly and deeply thru my nose and name two things I can smell

5 - Move my tongue around in my mouth and name one thing I can taste

I listen to meditation. Guided meditation, relaxing music or sounds of nature like you have mentioned.

Listening to those sounds now. Very soothing

I listen to rain with delta waves in the background. You can’t hear them but your brain pattern will match the delta waves and help you stay asleep. Also, keep alcohol to a minimum. Keep your sleep on a schedule if you can. I realize jobs and responsibilities don’t always allow that but as best as you can keep bed time and wake time the same. Best of luck to you

hi jrick, you obviously struggle with nights? is it anxiety based? I'm just the opposite, mornings are horrendous! please share more only if you want, maybe can offer some suggestions..whatever's causing your struggle with nighttime, I hope you find solace in something..take care

Hey, yea nights are difficult sometimes. The neighbors above me sometimes make alot of noise that triggers my anxiety; so I do breathing exercises and listen to music to cover my mind. It may not be as bad as iam making it which let's me know its not about the noise, it's about knowing there's nothing I can do to stop it and my anxiety runs wild

rain cleanses the soul I say.

Waves are as relaxing as rain to me. I think those are the two must soothing. Just make sure all lights are blocked out in your room and make it cool or cold at night while you sleep. I just splurged on new soft sateen sheets and a duvet to make the bed so inviting. Maybe you could do something nice for yourself like that. Also aromatherapy! Candles, hang herbs, etc.

I used to work the graveyard shift in my 20s and would get home at 7am. Living in a condo adjacent to A parking lot was hell. I researched and purchased a Honeywell 50250 hepa air filter that would produce white noise. This drowned out almost all things that would trigger my anxiety or cause me to be restless. I still own this device and use it whenever I have a hard time falling and staying asleep. It also cleans the air with a lifetime washable filter, so you can’t go wrong with that.

It truly worked for me. I had black out curtains, tried ear plugs and even the face masks, but in the end the white noise blocked out everything and created a constant stream that was soothing. Good luck.

I found a YouTube relaxation meditation that helps. Also reading, no caffeine past around noon (which is hard if you didn’t get enough sleep). I find that the rain relaxes me also. In fact I’m more relaxed in rainy climates. I don't find it depressing. I’ve darkened the windows so the bright morning sun doesn’t waken me. I hope you find something that helps.
