Thoughts on Lexapro/Antidepressents in general?

XxSadAnDConFuSeDxX profile image

My therapist would like to start me on antidepressents. I've always been against them and admittenly a little scared. They'd like to start me on Lexapro. I was curious if anyone else has been on it themselves and what they thought. I was going to try it, I have the bottle. But, I ended up looking WAY into it and saw all these articles about people dieing from these types of meds.

I was on Lexapro for years with no side effects. I've also taken Zoloft, Cymbalta, Rexulti, Vraylar, Klonopin, and Nadolol. Never had any real side effects with any of them.

Try out the Lexapro for a few weeks and see how you feel! You might feel so much better with it! And I have also learned not to Google medicines too much! It always just scares you!

I take Lexapro and I’ve only experienced mild side effects. I think it’s worth it to try it if it has the potential to make you feel better.

what type of side effects?

Mainly just constipation. And when I first started it my anxiety seemed to be worse for a few days but I knew it would pass and it did. So just be aware of that. I’ve been on it for 5 weeks now and I feel so much better.

I encourage you to try the medication and see how you respond to it. I have been on it before and did not have any side effects. Do remember though that sometimes anti-depressants take awhile to build in your system. You may not notice a change right away, but keep taking it once you start. A lot of people notice improvements in mood in about 2 weeks. Also like kittenkisses said be wary of google.... a lot of information doesn't come from the best sources. If you're worried about side effects or start experiencing them then get ahold of your doctor and let them know. Good luck!

I have been getting on it. 5 week in and starting to see a big difference. I hear it is a very commonly used SSRI because it has the fewest side effects.

There are always going to be those extreme articles out there on the web. Your heart will tell you if you ask. You can always start on them, and if you dont like it, get off. Good luck!

Take the advice of the good people who have replied to your post and take the medication you have been prescribed. When we become overwhelmed with depression and anxiety it is absolutely the right thing to do.

You need the respite that this medication will bring, then with a clear mind you may be able to look at your life and see where you can make changes that will lead to eventual recovery.

Any side effects are invariably minor and will fade after a week or two. But don't expect immediate results, you must allow several weeks before you feel the full benefit.

We are lucky enough to be living at a time when many medical advances are now available to us. Give thanks and take the meds. I hope you are free from your distressing symptoms before very long.

Hi SadandConfused, Actually I have been on Lexapro for 5 years now and it's proved

to be a life saver for me. I actually was able to get off my benzos and just have Lexapro

carry me. I was afraid like you before starting but I chose not to read anything about it

or ask anyone about it. Since we all respond differently to meds, I didn't want to influence

myself one way or the other. It is an SSRI and so it does need some time to reach full

efficacy, usually bet. 4-6 weeks. I hope you will trust in the therapist who has prescribed

this medication knowing your health and mental history. Good Luck and know that we

are here to support you through this important step forward. It will be okay. xx
