Prozac Dosage

My 15 year-old has been on Prozac since the end of October. His psychiatrist started him on 10mg, 4 days later put him on 20 mg. He did well on the 20mg but was still experiencing some anxiety with school. He was on 20 for 2 weeks and this past Friday she increased it to 30mg. He now is having trouble falling asleep which he wasn’t experiencing that on 20mg. My thoughts are going back to the 20mg for a while. I will call his psychiatrist today, but do you think that will be a problem or cause any side effects since he has only been on 30mg. For 3 days? TIA

It’s only been a couple of days. Try to give it a couple of weeks and see if the side effects don’t settle down.

Are you wondering if decreasing from 30 back to 20 will cause side effects? Prozac has a long half life and takes a long time to build up. Because of the long half life, it tends to have less withdrawal than the other SSRIs in general. 3 days would be too short to cause a problem with decreasing because it likely hasn’t reached steady state. I agree with calling the doctor for advice because he/she should know about the side effects and may have suggestions.
