Try turning your phone completely off and then on again. I have this issue occasionally with my iPhone and it’s very frustrating.

I just turned it on this morning. One just went away when I replied. So does that mean I have to reply? ... And thank you.

I don’t think so... maybe the reply kick-started your phone into believing you already read the message though.
