The Fairness of Life

*Warning* If you’re a firm believer in karma you may not like this post.

I’d like to take a moment to address a common thought in lots of people minds. Someone something said to me reminded me of a quote from a tv series I loved as I child so I looked it up. It doesn’t go quite the way I remember it but with a little expounding upon the message is still what I remember it being.

“You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.”

Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

If you truly think about it if life actually *were* fair then that would be absolutely horrible. It means everyone who has ever been abused as a child or any other time in their life deserves it. That the millions who died in wars that had nothing to do with the war itself deserved it. All of those children starving in the streets all over the world deserved it. Women and children captured and forced into sex trafficking somehow deserved it. That all those horrible people and dictators who have committed countless atrocities and lived long successful lives somehow deserved their power and status.

None of those people deserved it. Bad things happen to good people and I certainly can’t explain why. I don’t believe that anyone can.

I don’t say all of this to belittle anyone’s problems but in the hopes of providing some comfort and reassurance to anyone who might be reading this and be saying why me? What did I do that was so wrong?

I know I’ve thought it myself many times over the years... but in order to heal we can’t dwell on these thoughts. We have to move forward. We have to be strong.

So life isn’t fair... but considering the world we live in maybe that’s a good thing.

Please stop blaming yourselves and wondering what it was you did that’s so wrong. Focus on your present and your future. What you can control and what you can fix. Work to be better and someday you will be better.

This is brilliant. I didn't believe life was "fair", but I never looked at it this way before either. Great post.

Great Post fualhallen .. a new perspective to ponder upon .

Just to put more perspective from karma angle as well.

there is two things drive you life: karma and parakti (nature ) . Nature is simply which happens in world and universe and is beyond your control . No one can change the nature and change it’s outcome .. but we can always react to these either blaming the world or work to improve ourselves irrespective what’s others doing and thinking about it and that is our karma .

Hence we have saying whatever written in Prakati (nature ) nobody can alter , but we should develop strength to withstand it .

You explain so beautifully..., life may be unfair to us but just because this we should not be unfair to ourselves 🙏🙏

Thank you for expounding upon parakti. I truly wonder how I’ve lived as long as I have being open to knowledge and other cultures and not heard that part.

Thank you for both your kind words and the extra knowledge 😃

I always remember following prayer ...

“ give me the strength to change the things which I can change , give me the courage to withstand things which I can not change and give me the understanding to differentiate the both”

It summarise everything we all talking about and a great way to look at problems of our lives.🙏🙏😊😊
