I haven’t had panic attacks on a regular basis like this in almost 10 years. Now, they literally wake me up. I HATE taking Xanax and the last time it didn’t work very well for me. This is such a helpless feeling. I have 2 kids who need me and I just can’t keep falling apart like this. Meditation is so hard but I’ve been told it really works. I need to retrain my brain.

I have taken Xanax briefly at various times, but in the end, I started taking Celexa. It's something you take every day and it's great for anxiety and depression. I have been on it for a little over a year now, and I find that my panic attacks are much less frequent. I'll tell you that when I started taking it, I had just discovered my husband of 26 years was having an affair with a young girl and I was a complete and total mess. It really helped me. Good luck.
PANIC is absolutely the worst thing I have ever had to deal with. Benzo's are habit forming and work less well over time. Xanax I am told changes brain chemistry my Dr. said. That is why I only carry Ativan in my pocket for emergencies. You would do well to learn some Self soothing procedures to calm the lizard brain, as I have. I suffered from Ativan (Benzo) withdrawal and it actually made things horrible! Some say it is worse than withdrawing from heroin! Glad I am mostly past that panic agoraphobic era that froze my life in place. I never got the mediation thing but DISTRACTION I understand. That works. It was terrifying to be me and losing control of my life. That you wake up in PANIC is extreme and something I would be very concerned about. Best wishes on your journey.
What's changed in your life or lifestyle that might be causing the attacks? Did you start eating a different brand or type of food? Sometimes chemicals in the food cause me to have major panic/anxiety I've started eating mostly organic, for that reason. I've figured out that magnesium deficiency plays a big factor so I've started eating spinach and almonds and bananas...oh, and broccoli-pretty much every day. I cut meats and added chia seeds for the Omega 3's. And-I switched to organic coffee after I found out most are bleached and cause issues. Not sure if it will help you but eating healthier has helped me ALOT!
