Nursing to truck driving

For a change of pace and hoping to reduce my anxiety I'm considering giving up nursing and hitting the open road with my husband. Any thoughts?

Purplebiker, I'm a medical person but I say without a doubt, Go For It :)

Leave the stress behind you and enjoy the open road, the sun in your face and

the wind in your hair. Carefree like a bird. :) As long as you have the opportunity, it might be exactly what you need. I'm happy for you. But I stand behind you in whatever you decide. Good Luck. A new journey awaits you. xx

Yes! Thank you. Before I decided to go to school for nursing my husband and I always talked about owning our own trucking business. It's on my bucket list so I feel like I need to live that dream. I don't want to have any regrets when I'm retired. Nursing is a stressful job but it's a great accomplishment in my life as well.

@Purplebiker If you can afford to not work, and won't lose yours/your families health ins. by leaving-(You sure don't want to have to pay for Cobra for 18 months it's horribly Expensive), then absolutely you should jump in that truck, and enjoy seeing all the new sites along the way. You only live once, so you might as well Live It Up while you can!!! :)

Also, I'm not sure which State you're in, but if you aren't planning on actually Retiring when you leave, then there are usually like 3 other options you can choose to do with your nsg licenses. Most licenses renewal applications have a section that says Not Employed -Other Than Retired and you just click the drop down box and pick which option applies to you, that way you can keep your license active if you want to, but still let the board know that you're not working as a nurse right now and why.-You might have to do your CEUs-(depending on your Board but you can possibly do them online). Or you can Inactive your licenses temporally which is cheaper than leaving then active, (you can reactivate them at any time But most Boards require you to reactive them within like 3-5 years or they'll seize/invalidate them if you don't reactive them. I'm not sure how long they have to be active, or if you have to be actively working as a nurse during that time? You might have to do CEU's during the reactivated period too, then you can inactivated them again afterwards for another X amount of years, and start that all over- which is kind of a pain. Or you can just surrender them- which until you're sure you're going to like being on the road traveling, or that you're never going to use your licenses again, I wouldn't recommend surrendering them. Your State board of Nursing should have a lot of online info that will tell you what is required for each option, that will help you decide which option is best for you.

P.S- I'm sooooo jealous. I hope you and hubby have a blast!!!

Wow! That sounds absolutely fantastic, go for it, good luck!😊

If it is something you both think you can pull off then I say go for it. I was agoraphobic for fourteen years. I would love to travel now and see America. Do it! Just keep us updated on your adventure.

It's definitely a change....I know folks who've done career / job changes for the very reason you're considering doing it and they've not regretted it.

What a great opportunity! It might be nice to get on the road, get some fresh air, and reconnect. I imagine your nursing job is incredibly stressful and time-consuming. If you want to get back to it after a few months/years, you probably can pretty easily, right?

Oh definitely! Nurses are in high demand so it won't be difficult. In fact, I could take a travel assignment for a few months a year to keep my skills up to date
