I'm a 27 yr old man suffering from depression since high school and anxiety issues since early childhood. After 11 years of living with depression and anxiety, I have finally realized that I need help. I got married recently and it only made things worse. I can no longer suppress the feelings and I feel like I should be on medication, at least for the anxiety issues. I have insurance but never used it. I need professional help. Where do I start? Do I just visit a psychiatrist or first get a mental health screening?

How to get professional help?
For me it was a trip to my family doctor, followed by screening by a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist said that I didn't need their services and that my doctor could handle it. Was given citalopram and referred for cognitive behavioural therapy- feeling good 5 months in!!
hi sorry to hear of your struggles.your doctor can refer you to counselling but you could always phone or email yourself its usually quicker I think.dont spend your insurance not unless you really need to.but I wouldn't be using mine, hope you fel better soon.
Hi, thank you for the help. Why do you suggest not to use insurance unless really needed. Is it because its expensive or is it related to legal issues?
Thank you! Funny thing is I used to brag about how I never had to visit a doc in 6+ years. This is an uncharted territory for me.
