Hi I’m new here......I have paramaxal af and recently a few svt episodes. I had blood tests and my ferritin is 3 and iron 6 I feel so tired and have read that low iron can cause palpitations, so I’m thinking maybe the iron deficiency caused my svt also was really anxious for two months. Had anyone else had this? Thanks

you can ask for an iron store replacement from your GP or your hospital clinician.I am having one tomorrow at our local hospital as I have low ferratin .It caused dreadful palps earlier on in the year and towards the end of last year.medication more or less corrected that but ferratin still low so a hospital consultant requested an iron store infusion.

Thanks for your reply, my blood count is normal and I am not anemic but my iron stores are really low. Dr put me on ferrous sulfate one a day. I have been on them fir 2 weeks now and don’t feel any better, I called dr yesterday who said I can take 2 a day and see how I get on. I will bear an iron store replacement in mind. Is that a blood transfusion? Glad that the medication sorted your palps out.

No an iron infusion is not a blood transfusion. These are given less often than iron store replace. which is an artificial compound. The former has some risks I believe whereas the iron store replace is pretty much risk free. Only beware if yo uhave serious allergies as in peanuts as there may be a very rare chance of anphylactic shop. But they can deal with thay in the hospital or so i was told.Your doc. sounds lazy to me.Prob. cannot be bothered to refer you to hosp. You do not want constipation or tummy upset from too much ferrous sulphate .he/.she is taking the easy way out .I too do not have anemia but ferritin vry low. But unless it is topped up you will not make enough blood to keep your heart pumping well,as it was explained to me plus the general feeling off colour.Stick to your guns and press for an iron infusion. read up about in and go prepared to your doc.

That is very low. My daughter had this and it took quite a time to get up to a normal level of over 12.

Thanks for your reply. Yes they think it’s caused through heavy periods. Did your daughter just have iron supplements?

It was about eleven years ago. The doctor said that her ferritin level was 0, and her blood vessels were very small. She had high doses of iron supplements for quite a time before it got back to normal. Then she reached the menopause and I guess the problem has now gone away.

Wow 0!!! I’m 49 so think I’m in the stages of perimenapause ....the things women have to go through 😩Glad your daughter is ok now.

Have you been offered any medication to right this deficiency?

It sounds as though your diet may be lacking these nutrients. So you need to think long term and how to naturally ensure they are included in your normal daily diet. This may help:

Thanks for your reply. Yes ferrrous sulfate only one a day for the last two weeks but started taking 2 a day as from yesterday.

I have increased more iron rich foods and taking fresh orange with iron tablets to help with absorption. Thank you for the link I will take a look.

Goodness Zoe! That is dangerously low, I assume that you are getting medical treatment? I assume your HB is also low? You may have a bleed somewhere and yes, in the experience of a good friend, such low levels could trigger heart problems.

Thanks for your reply. My blood count is normal and I’m not anemic but my ferritin and iron are low. Not sure about HB. Dr thinks it’s down to heavy periods and not overly concerned. I am having a blood test Ito rule out celiacs disease. This maybe then the cause of my palpitations, also been feeling very anxious at times. Hopefully I will build up some iron soon 🙏

I've had an increase in ectopics and SVT and just found out I'm very deficient in Folate and my VitD is low but it always is.

Thanks for your reply. I also have had etopics....it just shows that any problems with your blood can effect your heart. Has your Dr prescribed you anything for it?

I'm talking to my GP next week. I have to take a bile acid sequestrant which stops me absorbing vits and minerals and I can't tolerate any supplements so it's going to be a big problem ! Good luck with your treatment 🙂

Sunbathing? UVB lamp?I have one of these and you only use it for very short periods starting off with less than a minute and gradually building up.

I'm outside everyday so generally rely on topping up with the sun but will look into getting a lamp 🙂

Being outside often is just not enough. It depends on how much of your skin you expose. Face and arms make very little vit D. I was diagnosed with a serious vit D deficiency despite spending hours gardening . I started to actively sunbathe exposing torso and entire legs though I dislike lying in the hot sun . I cover my arms and face so as to not get too many wrinkles! They get enough sun while gardening. Sunbathing has other good effects too like making nitric oxide which relaxes arteries and reduces blood pressure. Also as we age the skin produces less vit D so we have to "work " harder at it.

Hope your GP can sort something for you 🤞

Three years ago I was called by my GP to say I had a Ferritin of 10 and could I attend the surgery to discuss. I was not anaemic but so tired with the low Ferritin I could hardly climb the stairs.

Was put on Ferrous Fumerate and have been taking 2 tabs a day ever since. I have regular iron checks and although it is still low I am within the normal range. Take care
