Collagen Peptide supplements and bone quality

Y'all are familiar by now that ADT leads to accelerated BMD (bone mineral density) loss.

There are a series of things that can be done --

1, Get a DEX scan now

2, Supplement with Calcium, K2, D3 and magnesium

3, Have your MO or whoever put you on BMD medication (eg denosumab, et al)

Now comes the question. It is a fact that bone framework is made of mostly calcium but also collagen. Items 2 and 3 above have a good track record with regard to building bone mass, but not bone quality.

Quality means resilience against fracturing -- ie to have bone framework with a bit of give in it from collagen.

What is the community's experience / thinking about Collagen Peptide supplementation? I'd be flabbergasted if there was a study about it.

Thanks

I would also add creatine monohydrate (CREAPURE) to the list of my supplements according to one Swiss national institute of technology professor recommendation for elderly people.

My only problem with that is that my MO professor Joshua didn't approve it.

I am on ADT Degarelix injections.

The fear is that creatine could increase the body production of DHT and that would not be beneficial to me.

Last week I had the appointment with the endocrinology and they would be fine with adding creatine monohydrate to the list of my supplements, but when I said that my MO is not approving creatine than they said not to take it on that ground.

Therefore creatine monohydrate is a good idea for elderly but contraindicated for me on Degarelix ADT.

I have to ask for a second opinion about this issue as I am now facing zoledronic acide infusions as I turned osteoporotic after more than 4.5 years on ADT.

There’s never enough data on most supplements to know for sure how much they’re helping. Certainly collagen but even the ones that assumed beneficial like calcium and D3.

The confounder is exercise. Weight bearing is so good for bone density, bone health and everything else that for those who do a lot of it supplements are often just gilding the lily.

I hope you’re lifting.

I added marine collagen peptides in late 2022 and feel they are benefiting my situation.

Not a new treatment. Used for years, same treatment as osteoporosis. Be aware there are also risks and side effects so get all the facts. Some people with other health issues cannot use certain treatments for bone loss. Lots to consider. Tell your doctor about all supplements you take as it can affect your treatment. Again, one size does not fit all. Even (especially) if you read it on the internet.

Collagen is a structural protein that uses its own arrangement of the same 23 amino acids that make up all our bodies’ proteins. They must be broken down to be digested and then utilized. So all complete sources of protein are on an equal footing. Collagen protein from animal sources are just another one. I prefer whey protein powder for supplementing. Collagen is a very tough one to break down with our digestive enzymes.

Marine collagen. I am using 3g per day. Before I was using Meiji amino collagen with 500 mg arginine per serve made in Japan.

Marine collagen. I bought it yesterday and mixed 3g today with my chocolate milk today.
