PSA lab pre-requisites?

How important is this Pre- PSA Lab test omitting this below?

Requirements:

“It is recommended that someone taking Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R) stop consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample”.

45 day interim PSA growth lab this Tues.

There are several supplements that are known to interfere with PSA tests:

Ok. Does not say what quantites and length of abstaining from Biotin details.I’ve stopped Biotin Saturday, I mean Vitamin B supplements.

That's because it can vary so much. Why take any at all? It's very rare to find adults in the US with Vitamin B deficiencies.

Understand T_A.I’ve been taking Super B-complex since my superpoly neuropathy Dx 2009.

I’ve cut back to 1 tab AM and 1 tab PM for now. My Nature Made super B-complex bottle says ‘ Helps support the immune system and energy.

Doing a goood job of energy energizing.

LOL@ benefits on the bottle label.

You are absolutely correct! Always do not go by the Vit supplement bottle label.I will keep eating my Vit B foods, veghies, fruits, fish. I just read sie small print of Nature Made bottle. Ouch not evaluated by FDA

Supplements are drugs on which the multibillion dollar supplement manufacturing industry avoids regulation. There is no assurance that what is on the label is in any way correct, or that there is any quality assurance done. I'm happy that Big Pharma has to jump through hoops to get FDA clearance. It's not perfect, but better than the "wild west" of supplements.

Yes, Consumer Lab is a must for anyone buying supplements. And even it has certain limitations.

What is Consumer Labs?

dhccpa profile image
dhccpa in reply todepotdoug

ConsumerLab.com

It's like Consumer Reports but a separate entity. They review supplements and other products by testing them in a lab. They test for quantity (does this have what the label says it does?), quality, and have very detailed articles describing the limited trials that have been done on those substances (including letting you know if the manufacturer was behind the trial). They test for heavy metals, which the "organic" designation does not.

Limitations: 1. they comment on absorbability, but generally do not test it, 2. they do not test every brand of a particular substance, just 10-20 top ones, and 3. they do not test every brand on every substance. For instance, if you like Life Extensions or Swanson, they may do well on curcumin but not on berberine (just examples here), and then neither is reviewed for alpha lipoic acid.

However, overall, well worth having for $50/year. Their review of red yeast rice alone is worth the price, because they found that most have dropped their levels of the crucial statin ingredient so low as to be ineffectual. But they tell you the brand that is still effective.

I've been Qunol liquid (tumeric) since before diagnosis. Now I'll re-look at that and see what my MO says about it's effect on PSA readings. As usual great, concise, actionable information TA.

Thanks!

I know what little science there is is unclear, but I take 5000mcg of biotin daily to prevent cupping and splitting of fingernails. It works. Was recommended by a dermatologist who said try it- it works for some people. If it doesn’t for you, stop taking it. I stop it 5 days before blood work. It interferes with PSA and a lot of other things.

Wish I could find a way to slip a placebo in my daily meds to see if it really works, but it’s hard to blind yourself.

So in effect 30micrograms of Biotin incased in my Super Vitamin B complex twice daily is too much??

Do you have a B Complex brand that does not supplement folate? Wondering about brewer’s yeast perhaps?

I hope I can get to my 90s so that I can worry about my low B12/iron levels--and that you are around to seek advice from!

Nal,What a story, no lesson in life learning for me. 2009 since super poly neuropathy Dx I did nothing to supplement my body except alcohol. Then May 2011 hit me with my SCA. I did not pay any attention to nutrition until late 2011 early 2012.

Healthy-ier Doug started 2013 with vitamins. good lean meat seafood.

I shall re-read your article once I take a short rest from exercising and dog washing.

You do not look a bit over 70 yrs young in photos. I best scrutinize my Vit B12’s and super B everything carefully. And limit my cardioversions to less than 1/month.

Late Breaking news or Good News this AM.My PSA and Testosterone lab results in my care this morning.

Yes:

As expected Testosterone still < 3 ng/dL. I've been non-detectable < 3 since my stop of Lupron Depot injections June 2021, really Jan 2021.

PSA results are at 0.200 ng/mL. Granted no increase in 48 days compared to my 02/14/2022 read of 0.300 ng/mL.

Maybe a sigh of relief for awhile, next repeat labs May 05/17.

No doubling, no jump i should be happy, but am not.
