Flaxseed -pro or con or does it depend on your status

Not necessarily a very reliable site since they have conflicts of interest. However, the discussion of estrogens and flaxseed is of interest.

Dr. “Snuffy” Meyers, on the other hand, seems to think that they are a negative for advanced PCa: prweb.com/releases/2010/07/...

This article from Mayo is neutral on the subject: mayoclinic.org/diseases-con...

This article is rather neutral but advises that if you eat flax you get it from ground seeds and not oil. I agree with that. I’m rather certain that fiber is good for you and straight processed oil might not be beneficial. oncologynutrition.org/erfc/...

I've been adding it to a meal at least 2 times a week for over a year. Is it helpful with anything other than fiber, I have no idea. Tell me what I am doing right or wrong !!

in reply to Shooter1

I honestly don't know. I think that the fact you are using ground flaxseed rather than oil is good. I'm not sure if flaxseed is good or bad or if it makes much of a difference.

Do you grind it up or use pre-ground flaxseed? I know that whole seeds pass right through you.

I have a dedicated coffee grinder for seeds and spices. Really easy to fine grind whatever you want in small amounts.

in reply to Shooter1

That's what I do also. Black seed and others.

dhccpa profile image
dhccpa in reply to Shooter1

Can you recommend a good grinder? I prefer a compact manual one.

I'm using organic pre-ground seed now.

in reply to dhccpa

This is the one I got. Small, cheap, works fine. If it breaks, get another one. It's electric though.

I've got that exact grinder for seeds and spices. Slightly larger one for coffee. French hand one for pepper.

Hey RSH1!,

Organic, golden flaxseed is an ingredient in the blended drink I make that contains seeds and nuts. I blend the seeds to open them up to access the nutrients. Blending opens nature's packages. Pre ground flax gets many negative comments.

I add it to my oatmeal for more fiber and I like the crunches.

I grind flax amd broccoli seeds together and add to oatmeal and “casserole” type dishes.

Thanks Nal. I take lecithin also. In general, I think that the more processed something is the more likelihood that some synergists are missed. And the more likelihood of contaminants.

I messaged Patrick.

Why lecithin?? I use it on deer hides. Should I be tanning my guts too???

Thanks for hopping on my request so quickly! Haven't had time to go through all the links yet, but I did dig up some of Patrick's posts (to add to the confusion, LOL).

Starting to feel like I should just get my high-dose omega-3s from salmon, sardines, herring, etc. and feed the flax to the chickens.

in reply to noahware

No problem. Good conversation about a controversial subject. I certainly don't know the answers. Patrick is a smart guy and I'll likely tip over to what he says. First rule is do no harm.

Body does not need high dose of Omega 3 fatty acids...but it certainly needs a small dose of Omega 3 every day.. any vegetarian source is safe, preferred way.

Good post RSH, thanks for linking those articles... the one I find interesting is the NIH study that increased flax consumption does not raise ALA levels, which are positively associated with PCa progression... and possibly flax could be helpful if it lowers LDL, because PCa cells overexpress LDL receptors, and LDL is a carrier for ALA.

A very large (about 50000 people) epidemiologic study recently published concluded that PUFA (poly unsaturated Fatty Acids) from vegetable oils does not cause any harm in men with prostate cancer.IMO, the best ones for us are (1) Sesame Oil (2) Mustard Oil. They contain traces of Sesamole and Sulforaphanes respectively ...chemicals beneficial to PCa men.

in reply to LearnAll

I put one ounce of sesame seeds in my oatmeal every morning. And I frequently down some mustard powder. Do you think they contain the same things or is it more concentrated in the oil?

Reading your above posts makes me think that you are doing many things right. Actually, Seeds or seed powder are genrally better than only the seed oil. Nature is the best chemist and he/she has mixed chemicals in right proportion. .

Oatmeal not ready yet this morning. Sweetened with raisins. Flaxseed added, now will add sesame seeds for crunch and see how I like it that way.Doug

I haven't read all the links here and don't have time this morning to go much deeper.... but my conclusion FWIW from past digging is that I will avoid flax oil, but flax lignans are okay and possibly beneficial.

I eat Japanese Green Daikon Radish almost daily as salad. Nal, I have a Moringa Tree in my backyard. because Moringa leaves are put in Lentil soups (Daal) and moringa leaf powder is used in any vegetable curry.Recently, I have read some very interesting research about Nigella Sativa seeds.

Thymoquinone is main cancer killing chemical in Black seeds(nigella Sativa)

A randomised controlled trial last month showed that in severe cases of Covid19, black seed powder mixed with Honey resulted in equal or better outcome compared to Rendesivier or Hydroxychloroquin with Zinc.

I just ordered more Black seeds on Amazon. 2 lbs package costs $20. I will be taking 1 tsf of black seeds powder with 5ml of Manuka Honey every morning. Most important fact is that these seeds work on killing androgen independent PCa cell lines , PC3 and DU145.

in reply to LearnAll

How much Black seeds do you use? I buy the seeds from amazon and grind them. So far I down about a tablespoon but that was based on nothing more than the size of the spoon :)Is there a reason why you eat them with Manuka Honey?

I have been using organic pre-ground black cumin seed powder. Do you know if its thymoquinone content is good, or should I switch to whole seeds or oil?

LearnAll profile image
LearnAll in reply to dhccpa

Check if is Black seed (Nigella Sativa) because that is what the researchers used. They did not use oil...they used powder of Black seeds with honey. I sprinkle powder on every vegetable curry dish. You can use it in way you like.

dhccpa profile image
dhccpa in reply to LearnAll

Yes it is organic Nigella Sativa ground seed. I use about half a teaspoonful per cup in 1-4 cups daily mixed with turmeric, garlic, ginger, and annatto seed powders.

Grow and grind my own black cumin. Can't seem to cook beans without it.

Interesting about the sauerkraut. Where do you get the Naturally organic Fermented Sauerkraut, and what brand is it?

I like sauerkraut but just thinking about horseradish makes my stomach do flip/flops.

I love Jalapenos. Hotter the better. Ghost peppers are good too but hard on the stomach, and Scoville peppers but they can be nuclear. I frequently eat a few oz of onions a day and a couple of ounces of tomato paste.

One of my staple dishes is organic brown basmati rice, onions, vegetable soup, jalapenos, and misc spices. All organic. Put them in a slow cooker and eat through the day. I do a time-restricted feeding thing so my eating window is usually 5-8 hours. Once a month I throw in a day's fast and one long day to mix it up (eat for 14 hours).

With the exception of salts and other preservatives, and maybe some spices, seem severyhing eaten by humans is organic.........at leasst per Webster and chem teacher.

Sounds very good. Since I am keto and OMAD I put my jalapeños, red onion, thick slice of tomato on butter lettuce with a big grass fed cheeseburger ( no bun) and have it with a big mixed veggie salad - but no more than once a week. Will have to get LearnAll’s vegetable curry recipe. 🌶🥕🧅🥬🌶🌶🌶

Capsules filled with powders of spices and leaves. roots etc. are acceptable . I just do not like the gelatin capsules so I discard the shell of capsule after pouring the content in my food or smoothy . Not everything is available as live and fresh everywhere.

So many conflicting opinions, I presume best to avoid Flaxseeds until there is science to support the benefits
