ISO tutor for mech eng. grad school courses

Hi,

I'm trying to help my son locate a tutor for his grad school courses in mechanical engineering (specifically solid mechanics, and possibly additive manufacturing science). He needs someone who understands how his ADHD and EF challenges work, i.e. reviewing lecture notes and problems with him to check for understanding, needs time to process the information and then back and forth dialogue with questions, scaffolding the topics/steps to understand the material, speak slowly and clearly, etc. He's met with professors and TA's but it's not cutting it.

He should look check with people ahead of him in the program, or with the school's alumni association. Sometimes alumni are open to mentoring students. Or, more broadly, professional engineering associations might be a good place for him to look.• e.g. ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)

He could possibly tell the disability support services office at the school that he's looking for an ME grad student with ADHD as a tutor. They won't be able to tell him who else has ADHD, but maybe they can reach out to others who fit the profile to let them know that he's looking for a tutor.

• Many schools also offer tutoring services, mainly to undergrads, but sometimes tutors are grad students. He might check with that program.

• He can also ask advice from the office if the Dean of College of Engineering, and of the office of the Head of Mechanical Engineering at his school.

Engineering as a discipline does seem to draw a little bit higher percentage of neurodivergent people, so there might be a good chance of him finding a tutor or mentor who has or understands ADHD.

(I can say from my experience that I'm certain the Computer Science sector of engineering does have a higher than usual proportion of people with ADHD and/or autism.)

Until my junior year of highschool, I wanted to study mechanical engineering. I wonder if I would have finished my degree if I had stuck with that as my major. I changed majors 5 times, studied Computer Engineering for 4 years, but didn't finish the degree.

(Ten years after leaving school, I got my ADHD diagnosis, and it finally made sense why I struggled so much in college.)

After leaving school that last time, I worked at that university for the next ten years. That's when I learned about all the ways I had missed out on getting help.

So, I gladly pass on those ideas and bits of knowledge, so other students might succeed.
