adult son with ADD

I joined this community with the hope of assisting my son, never diagnosed, but obvious attention issues. I homeschooled him most of his youth so I saw it firsthand. Now he’s 23 and is having a very hard time finding employment. He’s a drum teacher but it’s very part time and doesn’t always meet his bills. I see him struggling with focusing on basic chores and remembering what to do and where things are. He’s very intelligent and driven in his music because he loves it. I would love to get him a kind of therapist to help him cope with distraction issues and teach him how to organize, set goals and overcome some of these small issues that mount to bigger problems, but I don’t know where to look. My husband and I went to a marriage therapist many many years ago that was terrible and almost broke us up so I’m concerned with a quality, preferably Christian based therapy. Any ideas where I might search?

Talk with your pastor. He might know someone in your area. Your son needs to be officially diagnosed by a psychiatrist. Medication is a big help. Your son can see a psychiatrist and a therapist. The best place to start is with his insurance. Get a list of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and counselors in his area that accept his insurance.

First of all I would recommend that you ask your son if he thinks there is something wrong" in his life. Does he realize he has attention issues and cannot really support himself > It is OK to tell him you have done some research on ADHD and think he might have it If he is interested he can still be covered under your insurance Until he is 25 so get him tested officially and then top see a Psychiatrist for medication management and a psychologist for some therapy . But if he denies the problem nothing you can do - he is officially an adult . Asd for therapy I would avoid religious based therapy frankly ( I am a Nurse Practitioner ). Also since there sees to be a genetic link with ADHD might be useful to look at your family tree and see if anyone in your generation your son's or previous ones had what seemed to be ADHD
