Commuting against someone’s will?

I have an odd question. My husband was diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and ADD. He started Ritalin LA last week. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and. Adderall works great for me. Everything seems to be a conspiracy against my husband. Legally, is there a way to have him committed for mental health treatment against his will? He’s threatened suicide many times to manipulate. Any advice

A doctor can have him committed if the thinks he is a danger to himself or others. You might be able to commit your husband. But if the doctor does not agree he is a danger to himself or others. They could release him within 24-72 hours or less. Each state has different laws governing commitment.

Hello Salsinator~

First off, welcome to the group.

You're talking about a code 5150, which can result in a 72 hour involuntary hold in a mental hospital. If the person is an immeninent danger to themselves others, then they will be held longer. If not they are released. As BlessedLady mentions, each state is different.

Have you tried BetterHelp? It's an online therapy group- either individual or couples. They also operate on a sliding scale.

Also, does his doctor know about this? Suicide or even threatening suicide is no joke. Using it to manipulate others is a least a cry for help. Maybe even contact a suicide hotline, so he and/or you can talk to someone right away.

Hope these ideas help you out.

Best regards~

sorry to hear this. so stressful.😢most states require TWO MD’s signatures to involuntarily commit someone past the 72 hours.

Suicide prevention hotline

1-800- 273- 8255. if he gets on the website there is an option to text vs talk. some people find that less intimidating. also, if u call the line, sometimes they will offer to make a 3rd party call to the person u r concerned about. take care of yourself too:)

Thanks. Appreciate all the replies. He showed his true colors to my friends this weekend and treated them with so much disrespect when they didn’t want to do what he had planned. He stayed in my bedroom all evening and was up at 4:30 bitching when I got up. Wouldn’t even acknowledge my friends when they said goodbye. His anger and resentment are u like anything I’ve ever seen.

Yes, 100% The criteria for a 5150 is suicidal ideation with a plan and the means to carry out that plan to end your life. Based on a mental health disorder.

Homicidal ideation is also criteria for a 5150.

And/ or being gravely disabled and unable to care for your needs of food water and shelter.

AND!!

The people who write the 5150s are often people who have limited experience with mental health disorders. Inaccuracy is common resulting in them being rescinded.

A 5150 is used to keep people safe and get them the help they need, and they are very common ( I have written many).

Another thing for you to consider is driving under the influence of a medication. Super common resulting in deaths, dUIs, jail time even if your dr. prescribes it.

And, lastly they are talking about, if you do have a particular diagnosis, restricting your driving privileges.

Unfortunately, my reply seems to be very late to this post. However, I want to let you know my experience with Ritalin and Adderall as well as my son's experience.

When I was diagnosed 29 years ago, after my son was diagnosed, I was 26 and he was 7. But, it became noticeable in second grade for both of us. When I first took Ritalin I immediately noticed I was seeing life for the first time, basically putting on glasses. It was miraculous. I would do very well at staying on task and finally accomplishing things in my life, like school that I never had success with before. I also was doing amazing at work. I eventually went on Concerta. When the Ritalin wore off after taking doses a few times a day, Many times I would have meltdowns at home. I would just have an emotional breakdown at the end of the day. I eventually felt depressed taking it. Then we tried Concerta and it wasn't as effective as taking the regular Ritalin. The Concerta wasn't as effective but I could concentrate but not as well and I felt like blah all of the time.

I eventually switched to Adderall, at that time only the brand was available so it was Adderall XR. Much better focus and no depression.

Everything I said for myself, can be said for my son. He even took a small dose of Adderall SA, I think it was like 5mg as he tapered off at the end of the school day and did homework.

I could absolutely tell when he took his medication and when he didn't just by his handwriting.

Anyways, my son and I are prone to depression and for that reason I will not take Ritalin or Concerta again.

I believe they actually use Adderall on elderly people in small dose(s) as an anti-depressant. On the days when I don't take Adderall because I want to take a break or else you do build a tolerance, I am not as perky. Also, I take Magnesium Glycinate as a supplement because most people don't get enough Magnesium and if you're taking Adderall it actually depletes your Magnesium quicker.
