Has anyone noticed their adhd medication dextroamphetamine sulfate or even adderal instant, which are effected by the acidity of the stomach,as you will be aware becoming not as effective or even being blunted by taking proton pump inhibitors omeprazole? I suffered daily frequent acid reflux & heart burn since started treatment for my adhd dextroamphetamine sulfate instant 20mg daily dose, prescribed 5mg tablets up to four times daily.

Having used tums /rennie brand here in the uk and gaviscon their effect is only temporary hence the advice of the pharmacist three days ago to try proton pump inhibitors for a maximum of 14 days but I noticed I'm now sleepy all the time, sluggish and the dextroamphetamine adhd medications is simply blunted.

I take omeprazole once a day before bed away from my adhd medication which is morning, afternoon, late afternoon.

Many thanks

Hi mos17. I can't directly answer your question. In general terms, I have read (in 'Delivered from Distraction') that taking Adderall/amphetamines with milk (calcium which neutralizes acids) will allow the Rx to kick in sooner. Take the Rx with a soda (acidic) will slow down the effect of the Rx. Hopefully someone can answer your question more directly.(I had to deal with acid reflux & heart burn during a very tough time in life. I understand how bad it can be. Often I would have to sleep in chair (more upright) as it was the only way I could sleep). Peace to you.

I really appreciate your help and answering my question 🙏 now you mention suffering from sever heartburn at one point in your life would you say the adderall or whichever adhd medication you were on worsened the heartburn or not? In my case it did 100% as its now daily whereas before I started adhd medication dexamphetamine sulfate it was never! Never suffered with heartburn and when I take a break for a day it does not happen the acid reflux! I read that amphetamine /adhd stimulants relax the muscle at bottom of oesophagus.

The Heartburn/GERD was before I was diagnosed with ADHD. Gaviscon and other liquid antacids would work great while I was drinking them. But soon after it got past my throat, it started right back up again. Like most things in life, you really can't understand someones condition until you had it. Before I experienced this, I wouldn't have thought that heartburn could be that big of a problem. (Yes, I do learn most things the hard way!) The TV commercials don't portray what it's like when it gets as bad as we've experienced. I believe (Hoped?) that if I did have my ADHD Rx at that time, for me, that physically I may have not have been in as bad of shape. My mind wouldn't have been going 200mph (our minds can do some awful things to the physical part of our body). With any type of medication, some people can have an unusual (Bad!) reaction. You're in a tough situation. But the heartburn, etc, can cause a lot of other problems in a short period of time. Not to be unpleasant, but eventually the acid started causing diarrhea. And I eventually ended up with Colitus. It was if I was burning a hole in my intestines. I don't say this to worry you any more (worry/emotional pain is what started all of these problems for me) but you obviously can't go on like this . For me, it was all in my head. For you, it's sounds like a bad reaction to your Rx.

I hope can get to see or talk to your Doctor soon (Covid is messing up everything). It can be a lot of Trail and Error, but you'll end up with an Rx that works for your ADHD without acid reflux. This not going to solve your problem, but remember, you're not totally alone in this. I do understand it.

Call your Doctor. He needs to know about this, and you need some relief. Keep in touch and let me know what changes are made and if they're working. Hang in there.
