Hi everyone, Its been a while since the day i was diagnosed with ADHD. My doctor gave me some medication to take and it was relieving for me which I was so thankful. Now my concern is, does anybody here know some alternative herbal medicine for adhd? if not alternative still can be helpful as herbs?. Honestly the medicines I'm taking up until now is kinda expensive that's why I'm looking for alternative medicine though I'm not really sure if there are even adhd herbs but of course still looking forward if there is. Thanks everyone, I hope someone there can help me.

Look up Rhodiola. It was recommended to me by my sons pediatrician as an alternative for my ADHD and I really like it. Helps a lot with focus but no crash coming down from it. You can take it in pill form as a supplement, but I get the most benefit from taking it in liquid form. I buy the Herb Pharm brand sold at Whole Foods and take it per the directions on the bottle - one dropper added to 3-4 oz of water, up to 3 to 4 times/day. Usually around $13.95. Best wishes to you!

I gotta be totally honest with you and say you are going down a path that will take a really long time before you see any progress, and the chance of that is slim. When you look for alternatives to the meds, you should be looking at the physical side of things along with simple diet changes. When you say herbs, I think of someone who wants to replace meds with meds that claim to be all natural, but at a much weaker state

You need to understand what is preventing your neurotransmitters from firing off. You should get a DNA test specific to those with suspected ADHD and see what you aren't processing. Methylfolate is a common supplement used in the treatment of ADHD for those who have the Mthfr gene mutation. There are other mutations that will help train your brain to start firing in the right direction.

Find out how to increase your norepinephrine levels. Sure there are herbs that make the claim, but those of us with ADHD need some serious stimulation that simple herbs aren't going to help with. I highly suggest a rigorous exercise routine or a good amount of physical activity. Personally, I go on long hikes twice per week and do physical yard work on the weekends. I tend to see immediate benefit from exercise and meditation.

It's also important to know your triggers and when to slap yourself back into reality. When I feel myself start to get overexcited, I step outside and listed for a bird chirp. Yep, that's what I said. I know it's weird, but it switches my focus to something that I would usually ignore. I feel like it resets my brain so I can go back to doing what I was working on without the frustration that was building up.

If you are still set on herbs, here is decent link to help you get started: rachellerobinett.com/read/2...

In regards to the genetic testing, did you request it or did your doctor recommend doing it? My husband and daughter both have ADHD (thanks grandma lol). Is the testing costly, I’m sure most insurance doesn’t cover.

I do know my insurance Medicare does not cover the test. I was told by my Dr. that it's an expensive test.

Hi there, I have inattentive ADHD. I myself take a very low dose of stimulant medication 2x a day. Unfortunately taking stimulant medication only helps the brain with the neurotransmitters Dopamine and Norepinephrine. That is helpful, but this still disregards the other neurotransmitters we have low levels of. Like Serotonin for example, low levels of this neurotransmitter cause anxiety, feelings of sadness, unease, depression, and difficulty with sleep due to Serotonin eventually turning into Melatonin (needed for sleep). A good strategy plan when it comes to supplements and ADHD, should include aiming to help the brain with the specific neurotransmitters that give us the most trouble due to their low levels. The following neurotransmitters need be addressed.

Dopamine : A neurotransmitter in the brain that affects your levels of concentration, motivation, pleasure senses, and sense of pain.

Norepinephrine : A neurotransmitter and stress hormone that deals with attentiveness, emotions, impulse control, planning ahead, sleep, and interpreting actions of others.

Serotonin : A neurotransmitter that deals with mood regulation, sleep, nervousness, empathy, appetite, digestion, and sexual urges.

Acetylcholine : A neurotransmitter that deals with muscle contraction, pain responses, mood regulation, REM sleep, and coordination.

if you click my profile pic, it will take you to my profile, where in my bio you'll see theres a link of a google doc I made of every supplement I take that includes ones specifically to help those low neurotransmitters I mentioned above. It mentions what grocery stores and online stores (Amazon has all of these supplements a lot cheaper than markets like Sprouts and Whole Foods) sell these supplements, and some information about each of the supplements and how they help out people with ADHD, in case you're interested.
