Extended Release Medication Problems

Verballydisjointed profile image

I find I crash hard from Adderall XR but not the IR. Anyone else have those issues? I've heard some people have problems with extended release medications but can't find any research on it to present to my doctor.

Yeah I think I’ve been getting that, I get headaches in the early evening which is when I think it’s been wearing off, and I get tired and find everything harder. Not drinking enough water can make it worse, but I drink plenty and still get them. I saw some people on a fb group talk about getting very emotional/reactive as well during the crash

I think it’s common and if you explain your crashing they’ll probably give you an IR to take later in the day to combat it? At least that’s what I think I’m going to ask for

Try Vyvanse. No crashing. The meds are designed to be slow release. And last 12 hrs

I think that's what Adderall XR is also supposed to be doing (lasting 10-12hrs)?

It's called evanse in the UK.It's medical name is lisdexamfetamine.

It works by breaking down in the liver and converting to dexamphetamine in to the blood system.

Ment to last up to 13/14 hours but I can tell you for being on them for years it only last in me about 7/8 hours.

I'm currently on highest dose possible with instant dexamphetamine topups during evening and I also take a 5mg instant at bed time as I can't sleep without it.

Elvanse or vyvanse is a pro drug which means it's can't be abused unlike instant Dex.

Maximum dose you can have in your blood system at any time is 240mg. Any more and the liver just blocks it out so it's safer than instant. However most doses don't go above 70mg once per day unless your adhd is really bad in which case in UK at least a specialist can offer up to X2 70mg per day and Any extra required will be given in instant Dex topups.

I've been on Adderall both ir and XL and found because it a mix of amphetamine not just Dex I felt like I was on street amphetamine the levo side of the amphetamine gave me heart palpitations. Pure Dex didn't.

If your in USA you can always methamphetamine on prescription which is much smoother lasts longer than normal instant Dex and offers better results however insurance can cost alot that's if they accept it in first place.

If they had in UK I would be on it as it's like the limitless pill for adhd it's worked so well for my adhd.

Any way any questions feel free to ask I'm an open book when it comes to adhd medications having been on nearly all of them

seems a bit inconsistent, crashes could be from the instant release formulations, not just the Adderall XR. That said, the XR formulation works by having two stages of release, with half being released immediately with the other half released a few hours later. You may or may not be able to notice this two step release.

Any liver processed medication will vary with your genes and liver particulars. As in a real world example you may notice some people can drink a lot of alcohol while others cannot. As alcohol is also processed in the liver, some peoples' genetics make their liver work more strongly or less strongly, and this applies to all drugs that are processed by the liver.

your totally right about instant stimulants and people crashing on them.thats one of the reasons im not just on instant dex only and take elvanse in morning and afternoon myself as myself and few other Adhd'er friends find Elvanse kicks in smoothly not full on and when it wears out its you dont really notice other than the fact you feel abit hyper like you do without your meds.

Ritalin and Concerta i found was nasty as hell, even as a child i was on the max dose and it wore out far to quickly and made me feel angry.

Concerta when the 2nd release kicked in i also got heart palpitations which i never got on instant Ritalin.

As for Adderall XR myself anyway because of the Levo Amphetamine one of the four parts its made of it made me sweat, heart palpitations and made me poo 4/5 times aday. having taken street amphetamine in base form for a few years before the Adult Adhd Specialist saw me a put me back on Adhd Stimulants ( I was ment to have out grown Adhd as a child was the Mental Health services view at the time which has now been proven wrong ) i felt the same symptom's on the street Amphetamines as Adderall.

Elvanse was only just put on the Nhs in uk as a trial when i got put onto it and have been on it ever since.

Some people will find Dexamfetamine Works Better than Mixed Amphetamine while others will find Methylphenidate works for them.

Its all Trials and error with Stimulants and finding the right dose for each persons body takes time.

Some people will find a Non Stim works well but i dont know many who they work for that well.

If OP lives in the Usa they will find they have way more options than I have in the Uk.

I also Know cannabis can be helpful for people who cant take tablets which in Usa is also an option.

The end of the day its finding what works best for you no 2 people are the same.

anyway ive wrote a marathon im off to bed all the best you and good night
