I'm new here, and really tired of fighting this thing! I was on some pretty heavy medication when I was younger, and came off of it when I was about 18. I am now about to turn 50, and finding that it is time that I got myself some help with this so that I can be my best for myself and my family. I live in the Seattle area, and am wondering how to get started with my treatment. Do I go to my family doctor? Do I seek out a specialist? I feel pretty certain that I need to be on something that is going to help my brain.

I am on a similar path, diagnosed as a child and now 51 and coming to the realization that I should have done something much sooner. As you get older, the stimulants are not the best approach, but therapy can make a huge difference IF you are invested in the change.

Start with your family doc (you'll need the basic physical/bloodwork, etc for any meds at your age anyway).

I would suggest you find a therapist who *specializes* in adult ADHD. Talk to them first, see if you think you'll find success with them. Almost always at our age you'll have "co-morbid" diagnoses (anger, depression, anxiety, etc.).

I have enlisted a CHADD listed coach as well because the impact on my personal life means I need someone who is holding me accountable to what I want to accomplish.
