Hello everyone. I am the mother of a girl who will be 9 next month and I am looking for support. I have never talked to anyone who has a child like mine, and she is very different from her older siblings. She has ADHD and takes Metadate in the mornings and also Prozac because she had extreme tantrums and mood swings, though that is a little better. Some of the issues I am concerned with are her impulsive outbursts (hair cutting, destroying other things in the house), seeming lack of ability to remember the most basic things after years of coaching (flushing the toilet for example), the fact that when I am teaching her (at home since last March) she seems to have serious problems with short term memory. I have no idea if these are severe symptoms or not or just par for the course…

I was a little girl who had undiagnosed ADHD, (although, it was a sign of the times- not of the symptoms) and tantrums, mood swings, impulsivity, and short-term memory do get better, but in my experience never completely leave. If I can offer any help, I'd be happy to. I wish someone had understood me then.

I was very much the same. I actually wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until my daughter was (though I am also Bipolar 2) and my children’s behaviors remind me so much of mine when I was a kid. I also have a 10 year old with serious mood issues. It’s hard to tell what causes what sometimes.

Hi there, Sorry to hear of your situation its so hard parenting a child with ADHD, my son was diagnosed about a year ago now, also takes Metadate and we just changed doses this week, he has moved from a small dose 2x a day to a time released version which stays in his system longer. I know sometimes the medications can stop working or lose efficacy, not sure if her symptoms are new or went away with the initial medication, but thought it may be worth a mention to you anyway. Just when you get through one day, another one is there. I don't know if I have much advice to offer you. But I hope you feel a little less alone knowing you are not the only one feeling this way and are struggling through it without all the answers just like many other parents. Hang in there.🙂
