Single mother stressed with child of ADHD

I have a 7 year old son whom has severe ADHD. It has caused me to loose jobs, as well as simply have a break down myself doing this on my own. I have thought of adoption and so many other tactics but I am trying this last step to see if there is anyway someone could help me and maybe inform me of something I need to do. It is to the point where my frustration weighs heavy daily and I can not find room for energy because I am always drained. Please help!

Hi there, don't give up. What have tried and have you talked to your Dr. about possibly medicating him, or signed up for therapy services.

The first place is to start with PCP, talk about your situation and ask for referrals for ABA Therapy and at the sametime check into a mental health center.

You haven'treally expressed what your challenges are? When you do you will receive information on others families deal with their kids.

I have a 6 year old grandson whom drives me crazy with his no stop talking and movement. We tried medication him but he wouldn't swallow the pill. He has an IEP at school, working on therapy, he in a therapeutic swim class and karate to help with some that energy.

Hope that helps. ☺

I’m so sorry you feel this way. I know what it is to raise a child as a single mom and if that child has ADHD, the hurdles tripled.

Please talk to your PCP, ask for help with social services in your area, reach out to pharmaceutical companies to receive assistance with medications for your son, and try to engaged in some fun activity for both of you.

It is a hard road and you have to prepare mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.

Pray and have faith. God won’t give you something you can’t handle. Reach out for help in your area: church, community centers, school, doctors, Social services, single mom groups, open up to your family and friends and ask them to lend you a hand. You have to have a time for yourself to recharge.

Don’t give up on your son. He needs you. Be strong. I’ll be praying for you.

Hello,

I’m sorry that you feel this way but I certainly understand and empathize with you. I was there. My son is now 11 but it was a very very very long road and it’s still challenging at times.

No one has “The” answer because all of our children are unique and while there are symptoms that all of our children experience there is no blanket response to this symptoms. All of our children display different levels of behaviors.

What I can say is that I tried EVERYTHING in my power and within my means. Inpatient stays, outpatient services, psychiatry, therapy, school system support.. everything. Not one thing made the difference but all of these things helped in its own way.

What really made the biggest difference is learning how to parent different. Traditional parenting is not going to work. So learning, skills, interventions, appropriate limit setting and boundaries and more importantly utilizing family support so that I could take much needed mental health breaks.

I hope this helps and even though you feel like giving up l, dont. It WILL get better! My prayers are with you!
