Hello I'm a mother of 3. Out of the 3, both of my boys have ADHD. They are nothing alike and I'm glad to see that there is a group of individuals that are in the same boat as I am. I have a difficult time trying to deal with having patients. I believe it's dude to the fact that I don't understand whats going on with them and why they do the things they do.

There are some really good books out there on how to parent children with ADHD. I would look at the reviews and make a decision based on that. I recently read "Parenting Teens with ADHD" and that was pretty good. The author also provides printable worksheets to for kids to set their own goals which is nice if they are having problems at school and you don't have to have the teacher do anything. Since the book is geared for teens and maybe preteens then for younger kids I would recommend a behavior chart focusing on one goal such as work completion and having the teacher initial with a permanent marker under the day of the week. I laminated it so we could erase with germx. What I also liked about this book is that it allowed me to realize that parenting these children is going to take an unorthodox approach that may raise eyebrows but you have to do what's best for your child. I'm at the point where if anybody doesn't like how I parent or doesn't want to be friends with me because I don't have the "perfect" child then so be it. I need to surround myself with nonjudgmental friends who genuinely care to be my friends. The book also discusses ways to love your child based on the 5 love languages such as physical touch, gifts, words affirming your love, doing something nice for your child, and quality time. These all don't have to cost a lot of money and can be done at your own home but it sends the message you care. We have to be careful not to compare children because they need to be valued for who they are. Find something to brag about each child because that will become their thing they can say is their own. At the end of the day I want my child to know that he has parents who will always love him because there are people out there who may not understand him and choose to stay away. I leave you with this quote when considering how to love a child with ADHD, "If not you, then who?"
