Yesterday I was not intending to buy new shoes but I did! To be fair, proper trail shoes were on my list of things I’d like after a super muddy run home through sodden fields a couple of weeks ago. A pretty pair were reduced and just called out to me from the wall…
There’s no point trying to keep shoes built for mud clean so I decided to take them out today to get them dirty. First attempt aborted this morning due to icy pavements. After waiting for the sun to work its magic, I went out this afternoon for a run/walk around some local bridleways, aiming for about 3km. It was cold but bright. Very little wind for the first time in ages. Perfect conditions. I’d imagined the paths would be frozen but they’d defrosted and turned to giant mud puddles in places. A great challenge for the shoes which coped admirably. There were some fairly steep uphill and downhill sections needing a lot of concentration but that was ideal for today. I was very confused as to why the distance counter was hardly going up and then I realised it was just on the actual time-2.23pm!! I’d actually covered 4km at that point and ended up with 6km in total. Spotted a deer and the first snowdrops of the year. A great outing!
