I thought it was time for a little challenge here on Active 10. A six week challenge ( don’t worry will will carry on afterwards as well)
There are quite a few of us looking to do something together with other people.
We can’t put us together in the real world but we can make a little walking group that we can all be part of on here and share our exercises.
So whatever you do please join our 6 weeks walk together challenge.
The “rules”. Are there are not really rules just guidelines
Put a post underneath staying what you want to do, any of these are fine or come up with your own.
Walk three times a week
One speed walk a week.
Try a distance walk ( whatever a distance is to you, we are all different and at different levels.)
As soon as you make that first post you will become part of the challenge/group.
Through the week post your progress on the post below but please feel free to put a whole new post up with pictures of walks, dogs you take with you, anything you find interesting On You walk and want to share. All these little things help to make us feel part of a virtual walking group and that way we are less likely to feel like we are doing this in our own,
So let’s WALK TOGETHER.

My challenge for this week is three separate outdoor sessions. Walking/ running or just strolling along but I want get some exercise In The fresh air, especially hike the nice weather is still around.
Oh yes, we've got to make hay now cos we're on the cusp of autumn's unpredictability! I just love the colours of autumn and the slight nip in the air - outside is definitely the place to be!
My challenge is to do 3 walks of 3 to 4 mls including next Saturdays 5k park run which will be more walking than jogging on my part! Good luck to everybody doing the 6 week challenge.
Sounds like a great challenge. I often walk at parkrun, usually when I'm volunteering for tailwalking or close-down but also when I just don't feel like running. Let us know how it goes!
I would like to join RFC. My challenge is to have three after dinner walks. Normally if I wait that long in the day I don't get out, but it would be such an easy way to add in a little distance. I'm not putting any expectations of time or distance on myself, just getting out the door for a few steps will be the goal.
I would like to join in please. My challenge is to walk somewhere different at least once a week during the challenge. Normally I walk quite a bit with my dogs but tend to stick to the same routes on a daily basis and almost do it on auto pilot.
I,m car less so walking every day need to speed up a little without doing damage but increasing cardiac output any suggestion I,m overweight and unfit ie what shoes dose anyone suggest .
As a positive joined the forum sometime a go love reading all the positive comments and going to join in with the 6 week challenge to increase my speed power walking.
Hi there and welcome. Great to see you joining the challenge.
For shoes I like flat and comfortable for walking. For me I always to go for a trainer, but if I had my way I would probably live in trainers.
Picking up you pace while walking is a great way to keep the heart working. The Active 10 app is great for that. I know it has been a bit glitchy lately and maybe we should do a post on how to do that without the app, I know Hidden was having a go with that.
Don’t worry we will help you build up slowly and keep you going.
Hi there suestevens94! I don't walk very long distances because I've got mobility issues, so I don't have specialist shoes! I try to do my 10 minutes brisk walks twice a day and in summer I just wear crocs (not very much support, I know!), but now the weather's started to turn it's blingy trainers for me!
I like shoes that are supportive and have good grips. I think every brand fits slightly differently, so I always go for the same running shoe brand and work/walking shoe brand because I have small narrow feet. Try a bunch on and walk around the store. In Canada at quite a few of our larger sports stores they have fake terrain you can test the grips on
Hi I would like to start the 6 week challenge. I am going to have a walk everyday. There have been some big changes in my life in the last few months (mostly good) routine and exercise have gone out the window. This may help me to refocus!
Good idea. I find posting helps to hold me accountable to myself. Glad you've had good changes!
Oh gosh yes, Rfc! Since moving home my walking routine has flown out of the window. I'm going to walk the hill twice a week and have a longer walk in between, going down lanes and snickets I haven't explored so far!
Only a matter of time. It's like you need to practice on each separate kind of hill. Long but gradual. Short and steep. Or the dreaded long and steep 😀
And there are lots of dreaded hills in this village, runswithdogs - just about all of them! Maybe next year I'll attempt one in its entirety - for now the bit between the pub (my new coffee supplier) and my home is challenge enough!
Hi there. That sounds like a great plan to keep up with. I keep saying I’m going to get my Nordic sticks out again. Last time I did I ached for days 😀.
Go on give it a try. When I first started I thought I would never walk as far. But now I don’t realise how far we have walked.
It's a month now since I commited to walking regularly to tackle a rather stubborn winter comfort eating tummy tyre brought on by dark mood, dare I say depression? Not many years ago I could comfortably walk 4mph for a couple of hours. With a bit of effort have achieved 3.8mph in the last week for around an hour. Taking this as the starting point my desire is for this speed to become effortless for 90mins straight over the next 2-3 weeks. Efforts so far have seen a slow puncture in the tyre at least. At the end of 6 weeks hoping it to be more bicycle tyre than motorcycle. Making a commitment will hopefully keep me on task.
Hehe I’m sure it will just be a wheel rim soon, no tyre at all the amount of work you are putting in. I find walking is so good for mood. If I need to de stress it is my go to thing. We will help keep you on task.
You are speedy! Your goals sound really good. Glad to have you join. I read somewhere that new habits take 60 days or so to really sink in (I'm trying to add some new habits myself), so you're doing great already with a month in the bank.
In total I am working on 13 weeks to find the old me. Inevitably waning enthusiasm will strike at some point but having to be accountable hopefully will minimise that. As for speedy, the British Heart Foundation training plans (which are excellent) would see me the lower end of intermediate. Their advanced plan has a speed goal of 12 minute miles. I know my limitations! I live in a culturally diverse town and note that some Europeans walk very very fast all the time. My speedy is their norm and certainly makes one reflect on their targets.

Oh gosh zannamette, you're doing so well! I've been out of my routine for about 6 weeks and am finding it hard to get back into it, so you're really committed! You'll be saying goodbye to that tyre really soon!

Going on my experience of reasons not to do things - perhaps commit again sooner rather than later as days are shortening. I am in my predicament as I used the summer heat as an excuse. I should have made a better effort to reorganise my routine. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and one has to work so hard to regain what is lost. Little steps better than no steps!

Tell me about it! I moved 6 weeks and ago and oh my word, it was really hard work! Now I've unpacked (finally!) I'm trying to get back to normal living, so this challenge has come just at the right time!
I've eventually done my 1st walk of the week! After waiting around for 3 days for a delivery, a workman and the sheltered housing warden, they all turned up this morning! I got out around lunchtime and managed a half hour meander, with 5min brisk walking. I still have oxygen debt when I get back home, but hopefully by the end of this challenge that will have changed!
