I know this is a bit of a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question, or should I-be-running-5K-in-30-minutes, but roughly what constitutes a "good"walking pace? I know we are all different, but is 4 MPH (6KPH) still considered brisk walking?
Good walking pace.: I know this is a bit of a how... - Active 10
Good walking pace.
I would say so
Naismith's Rule for average pace is one hour for every 5 km walked on the flat
+ one hour per 600 m ascent .. so your pace is brisk ?
I've never heard of this rule, so I Googled it, it makes interesting reading thanks Floss xx
Used to use it when we climbed and mountaineered..🙂
I might have to measure my pace now. 5kph on the flat sounds a bit slow...even for me!
Naismith's rule is based on an 'average' man at an 'average' pace..you use the rule and tweak it to your own 'average'.i.e.my average pace is much faster than my husband's😃
Now I am intrigued. I have got a longish walk tomorrow. Now I just get the app thing on my phone to work!
It is interesting... before I started C25K running.. (the other forum :)) Husband was always faster than me when walking, and had to adjust his pace... now I walk fairly briskly most of the time..and he tells me to slow down
Let us know what your pace is! xx
So, Curlygurly2 , after getting MapMyWalk to work, (by turning the phone on and off!), I measured my pace this morning. On the flat, with library books in my back pack, on tarmac at a "determined" pace, I walk at just over 6kph and each km is about 9 mins 45 secs. I am sure when I am off road enjoying a walk with my family, stopping to examine wildlife, I am a lot slower! I am a slow runner, my fastest 5K was just over 40 mins, but I tend to get told to slow down when I walk!
My other half makes me cross, he says he walks at 7 mins per KM, apparently he did it once on a treadmill at the gym. He can't keep up with me though when we're walking together, and I'd love to RUN a 7 min KM!
I always thought that the best speed / pace was the one you could maintain and achieve what you intended....
I am slow but have health issues so as long as I feel I have had a good workout then I have walked fast enough.
Impressed with everyone who starts with just a short achievable distance then thru' hard work and dedication cover much longer distances.
Intend to do this myself this summer.
Cheers Dennis
Yes I understand.
It is just that I see so much about how fast or how far one must walk e.g. 10k steps per day etc without the simple fact that exercise limits apply to most of the population.
I just like to see more of "Get out and enjoy" approach and just do what you can. I do not include housework, shopping type activity as that is life. I consider a set walk over whatever distance and time as my routine be it 1k or 5k steps. Also I chicken out of doing rain!!!
I can get up a good pace of about 6.5 km per hour, if there are no roads to cross or traffic lights to stop at. My husband and I consistently walk at about 6 km per hour. My walks back from work are at about 5.5 km, due to traffic lights and other annoying things. I've always enjoyed fast walking (even walking to school I was always trying to overtake anyone ahead of me - and the ignominy if I got overtaken myself!). I think I've got slower in my old age though. I still hate sauntering along - I can't seem to do it. Fortunately my family is the same!
