2.8cm ovarian cyst

Hi

A year ago I took myself to A&E as I was in excruciating pain and bleeding when I wasn’t supposed to be. They weren’t any help at all and said it was a bad period (it definitely wasn’t). After this I have had an ongoing dull ache/ pain in my lower left abdomen.

I had an ultrasound in May and they said my ovaries were normal but my CT scan from August has found a 2.8cm cyst on my left ovary.

My question really is,would a cyst this small cause the pain and why was it missed on the ultrasound? If it wasn’t there in May then this can’t be the cause of my pain as it had been going on long before that. I can’t put my finger on any triggers that set the pain off either. It’s not ibs or anything like that and sometimes it’s bad on my period sometimes it’s not. The dull ache is there most of the time everyday.

If anyone has any similar experiences I’d be happy to hear your stories.

Thankyou, I’m definitely going to book an appointment to discuss this with the gp. My other thoughts were that it could be undiscovered endometriosis so think that’s probably going to be my next route. Thankyou for your advice

I had a fimbrial cyst that wasn’t discovered in a scan prior to the procedure in which it was noted. I am sure it was there all along.

I would proceed as if it’s that causing the pain until / unless you find the other reason. Is it going to be removed?

The letter from the consultant just said that they were discharging me back to the gp (this was a colorectal consultant so I do understand that this isn’t his field). I have requested the actual scan report though as I’ve come to realise that they never give you all of the information.

A thyroid nodule was found in July but the letter I received just said “a nodule on your left lobe was found,this looks benign”. Once I got the report I requested, turns out it’s 2.4cmx2.2cm, solid with internal vascularity! I know this is nothing to worry about going by the rating system but I would like to keep my eye on it and having all the info would be helpful.

I am waiting for an appointment to have my tubes tied and I’m hoping when I have this done that they might remove it or if there’s anything else to see they’ll find it then. It’s just a very long and frustrating process.

I may be wrong, but this does sound like endometriosis?

I had the experience six years ago of pain in my lower left abdomen, went to the doctors, got referred for an ultrasound and they found nothing and had blood tests.. which found nothing .In the meantime, the GP had spotted that the nurses hadnt done a specific blood test called CA125 which he had requested...so recalled me to the practice to get this done. A couple of days after the blood test, I got a phonecall to come into practice, as they had concerning results from this test...They referred me for another ultrasound, only two weeks later than the last.

Had this done, and showed up a 10cm cyst!

So please keep pursuing this, if you have these symptoms, as mistakes can be made by the medical profession, and they are sometimes unlikely to diagnose endometriosis without surgery?

I think it could be this too. The doctor did say that depending on what all the tests said she would refer me to gyne for further investigations. I definitely think that’s the route I’m going to have to go down.

I’m hoping that when I have my tubes tied they might find it then if I have it, saves me having two procedures 😂

I honestly think they think I’m making it up most of the time, in my recent blood tests all my vitamins came back at rock bottom but they never saw this as a cause for concern. So that’s another thing I’m working on getting back to normal.

Hi, I'm sorry that you had to experience this. Pelvic/abdo pain can be awful and sometimes people don't get the right diagnosis.

The excruciating pain you had earlier could have been a cyst accident. Normally they're one off incidents where the cyst bursts and the ensuing pain can be excruciating but it settles not too long afterwards.

Ultrasound scans can't always detect everything due to myriad reasons. Nonetheless they're an excellent diagnostic tool. Sometimes cysts come and go. They appear and disappear. Especially if they're small ones.

2.8 cm is a small one and there's a likelihood that it may resolve on its own. If the cyst was over 5cm it would have required a follow up scan and review.

If you have ongoing pain that coincides with your period it may be endometriosis. But it's worth investigating. Don't hesitate to fight your corner and be insistent with your GP that you need further investigation or support. All the best! x

P.S getting a diagnosis for endometriosis can be a long, arduous process. So do push for it if you suspect that you may have it. The diagnosis usually involves laparoscopy.

Thankyou Whimbrel, I think I will also have a private scan in the new year to see if it has resolved itself (as I don’t think the go will follow it up as it’s a small one) I just want to see if that could be the cause of my pain.

Many years ago in the early 1990s I had ovarian cysts and although they was small and wasn't found by the mri scans and it went on for 2yrs I was in and out of hospital and eventually they at to do an internal scan and then that's when they found the ovarian cysts 2 on my right and one on my left side they were small but really painful and made me sick and it got them muddled up if it was appendicitis and my periods at the time was really painful with these issues when I didn't know what was causing the extra pain in a periods I would be OK for several weeks then ill again with painful tummy again and in hospital. Until eventually they found what was causing the pain and no mri or any scans would show up. But then at a certain time in hospital it didn't show up in mri scans or any other scans so they did a internal scan and it showed up in fact in the op they found 3 of them and removed them. I hope you resolve your pain tummy.

I’m so glad you finally got that sorted! It sounds awful. I’m starting to understand that just because they say they are small and shouldn’t be causing the pain,they actually can at that size, I also get really painful ovulation, like I actually know when it’s happening because it hurts so much. I’m going to keep pushing for answers.
