Do I need a referral to see a surgeon for gallbladder removal surgery? Can a nurse practitioner refer me to a surgeon or does it have to be a doctor?

You would need a GP referral for something like that. If your GP has your medical history, you may be able to have a phone conversation with them to request the referral, but I imagine they will want to do an examination before referring you.
