Liver confusion

Hi there

It’s my first post.

I am 16 years old and over the last year or so have notice a huge difference in the coloring of my hands and feet vs those around me.

I am vegan however I do not think that has anything to do with it... I do not eat carrots or sweet potatoes or anything with carotene in it nor do I use anything tanning or any products that would stain my body yellow / orange.

Just recently I have noticed that in the corners of my eyes, they are a faint yellow.

I did have my blood drawn and everything came back normal. I am not sure of the tests they ran... I just went to a pediatrician and they ordered for my blood to be drawn.

If there was something going on with my liver would it have showed up in the blood panel?

I am very active and fit, healthy girl.

I don’t know if this is related but I feel as though I almost get fatigue.

All of a sudden I’m awake and the next I just can not keep my eyes open and will take 1-3 hour naps afternoon.

Like I said not sure if that is related but figured I would include.

Just wondering what you recommend. Go see a specialist? Or not worry because the blood panel is fine?

Hi🙂 If you’ve had basic testing, everything comes back normal, but you continue feel unwell, go back and see your doctor. Who can say what the tests were for if no-one told you. To hypothothise as to potential reasons for fatigue, deficiencies etc might be doing you a disservice. Find out what the tests were actually for, this might answer your questions, and give you peace of mind 🤔 xB

Hi Isabel

I presume billirubin was included in your liver profile? That's a common reason for yellowish eyes (and is nothing to worry about). Doctors rather quickly diagnose it as having Gilbert's Syndrome which I think is a cop out.

My billirubin was nearly 4x over range ~18 mths ago but only slightly over range a couple of months ago. My skin (especially hands but not eyes) are a bit yellow though which I'm currently researching. Maybe we should continue to compare notes? - you can message me.

It depends what tests you had but the liver is tricky because you don’t get symptomatic until a lot of damage is done. The good news is I am sure they did lfts liver function tests and electrolytes if you told them you are vegan and wouldn’t be concerned. I would try a vitamin just to make sure my body wasn’t lacking something. If you have other symptoms or it gets worse I would see an endocrinologist or specialist for peace of mind.
