Hi,

Is anyone out there going through the peri menopause and on HRT? I'm hearing so many mixed reviews-unsure what to do?

Hi Vanessa_M

I'm going through this as well, with some varied symptoms including headaches; short temper; night sweats; lack of sleep and no periods for 8 months (although I get my normal pre menstrual symptoms!). I did a lot of research on HRT, eating habits and alternative herbal remedies, and decided that I wouldn't use HRT as a first choice. I am now using Menopace, manufactured by Vitabiotics. I've been using it for about 3 months and can honestly say that, for me, it has reduced my symptoms. I still get the symptoms, but they are more manageable. I have also reduced my alcohol intake; drink decaf tea and coffee and have a bedtime routine to help me get ready to sleep rather than lay in bed thinking. I also carry out more exercise (walking) and spend my spare time gardening so I am more relaxed. The tablets may have not helped at all and it may have been all the other things, but boots have them on 3 for 2 all the time, so they don't work out so expensive, even if it is just mind over matter! Other makes are available.

I'm not sure that there is a one size fits all approach to this and it has taken me a while to recognise what helps me, however, I hope this response has given you some ideas to try before going down the chemical route.

Hi Vanessa_M

I too am peri-menopausal and am having the same dilemma as you. My symptoms seem to have got a lot more intense the last month, especially the emotional side - I seem to be all over the place, scary for a control freak 😬! I did speak to my GP re HRT and he was against putting me on it as he said he saw women that are on it 10 years later and as soon as they try and come off it their symptoms return- so I guess this put me off. However as I am now feeling a lot worse I'm starting to consider it again and like you are weighing up the pros and cons. I decided that I would go on the NHS 12 week weight loss program first to see if losing weight helps my symptoms and go from there. Hope you find the best solution for you 🙂X
