My starting weight is 168kg which is about 26 and a half stone. the nhschoices guide say men should take 1900 calories a day. Should that be for all men or can i eat more calories than that and still lose weight eg should the calorie intake be tailored to the individual

Hi beardy,
I would suggest sticking to the 1900 calories but you can work your way down to this amount. if you are going to do that then I suggest you start at a maximum of 2500 then try to cut down 100 cals each week.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Calories should be tailored to the individual. If you use MyFitnessPal, it will tailor the calories to you individual situation and adjust your calorie intake as you lose weight. I started with 2300 calories and I am a woman. I still lost weight. I am now on 2180 calories and losing. It is a slower rate of weight loss but easier to follow and you are less likely to starve and give in to temptation.
thanks for the answer 2300 myfitnesspal recommends for me but i will start on 2500 and work my way down
Hi Beardy,
You're asking because 1900 cals sounds really restrictive right?
It doesn't have to be, as long as you eat the correct portion size of what you want.
Of course calorie intake should be tailored to the individual, as there are some people with dietary needs that should be taken into account.
If you are concerned see your GP or nurse and have a chat with them about it. There are a couple of people on here that see their nurse regularly as part of a healthy eating/fitness programme their local NHS does. Have a read around the questions and blogs for more info and helpful advice.
Yeah 1900 sounds not a lot. my health is fine apart from being overweight im going to start on 2500 and work my way down
