Tips Please?

Hello All!

I am looking for ways I can lose weight. I struggle with binge eating, and am deeply dissatisfied with my body. While all my friends have had at least two significant others, I am compared to Gorlock, and other fat people, and called ugly by almost all guys, to my face, all insults usually directed towards my weight. Naturally, I'm exhausted by this, and truly need a change. I'm in my senior year of high school, and play two competitive sports, all which would be great to lose some weight for. I'm 5'3 and weigh in at 120 pounds, I ideally would love to eventually reach 100 pounds. Any tips are greatly appreciated, especially with how to stick to a diet!

Hi triathletegirlie_1 and welcome to our weight loss support forum. Firstly well done for all your sports activities, I'm sure that all that movement helps you to stay in a healhy BMI range.

If you lose 20lbs that would give you a very low BMI (Body Mass Indicator) and put you in the underweight range.

I suggest that you try to maaintain your current weight and maybe address your binging with an expert.

This is the link to our pinned posts where you will find everything that we have to offer ,inluding our Daily Diary where we share tips for healthy eating and our weekly Weigh In where we both give and recieve support.

Sorry to hear you have been the target of such rude and unnecessary behaviour. People can be so cruel -you do sound quite matter of fact about it and that is credit to you but it really is unacceptable so I hope you have a few choice words to repond when this has happened and some good friends to stand by you. I can’t advise on binge eating so maybe a professional might be able to help, but I can suggest you consider joinging a slimming group where you will get support and the weekly weigh in can help fous your mind. If you want to do it yourself, I’ve had success focussing on a low carb diet - maybe a little challenging if you have a particularly sweet tooth but its a good way to keep hunger at bay. Maybe google some low carb plans. Lots of support on here too if you join in.

I am sorry that these people are being so horrible to you. People are really cruel and it must be affecting you in so many ways.

It must be especially damaging for your binge eating and your body and self image. Is there a counsellor or online support that you can access? I am in the UK and I know that there are on line support groups here. Some are especially for younger people, they may be a safe space for you to explore your feelings.

You are, of course welcome here anytime as well.

Hi,

You asked for tips, so this is just what has helped me.

Are you eating properly before your sports? So you don't have a huge hunger to satify after the game?

Play mind games on yourself - you are trying to resist the urge to binge so tell yourself -"I can eat 4 biscuits in 10 minutes time, in the meantime I will do x", x can be any constructive task that you can complete in 10 minutes. This has the benefit of delaying the binge, & you have achieved something - small maybe but better than bingeing immediately. Of course the hope is that after some practice 10 minutes becomes 15 minutes, etc.

As for critics - their one-dimensional view of the world is their problem, not yours. (Apologies if that feels a bit glib)

I am a lot older and I can remember in my late teens it was almost accepted for people to call names even if they were known to be attractive , smart , savvy etc . We were told to ignore it but it hurts and things haven't really changed . Try a free App called Myfitness pal where you can scan barcodes of your food and it gives you a simple guide to what you are eating via a daily input menu diary so put in everything including drinks . It recommended 1200 calories but I actually lost more and wasn't as hungry aiming for about 1450 - max 1480 . I didn't realise I was consuming too much salt , otherwise I mainly kept to eating fresh and with the help trying to balance. Maybe advice from an expert to just tweak what you are eating - would a family member or close friend be interested in this too ?

I did quite a bit via distraction . I would walk home or get home when it was meal time so calling in the library , trying a new hobby - I started Spanish or try music etc. As I started following my plan I got into a mental mode of feeling better if I didn't go off track and proud when I kept to the plan .Off days - I have more than a few especially now in UK it is colder and darker = longer evenings . I have a low cal hot choc drink made with boiling water that I have to sip . Can you think of any distractions like crafting , jigsaws , board games or gaming with a friend - many have quite fun exercise games you can do together .

You are addressing this and won't want to be told you are an ideal weight but looking at the figures and another your height - this ain't no mountain . Could you try guided weight training as another idea might be to tone what you have already got . Wouldn't see a dramatic drop in weight loss but eating quality food and enjoying a challenging exercise regime may be an alternative to just concentrating solely on food .

Not what you're looking for?
