Sourdough Bread

Yesterday I made a simple lunch of Baked beans on a small slice of sourdough bread and a poached egg. I am not good at eating bread, I eat very little, usually I buy locally made artisan bread. My husband researched sourdough bread online and there was a post where someone suggested Jason Sourdough was the most healthiest you can buy commercially so I bought one. Last night I had a really bad night during the night with indegestion, I have a Hiatus Hernia and take Omeprazole to combat it. I was up half the night with a bad stomach. I don't know if it was the bread, beans or the combination. Back to no bread for a while. GF bread does not help by the way. Today I'm making shakshuka which is on the NHS healthy eating website nhs.uk/healthier-families/r... lunchtime is our main meal time with a snack in the evening so the 417 per portion should be ok.

Why do you feel the need to eat bread? While sourdough is amongst the healthiest that doesn't mean that it's good for you, just that it's the least bad for you. Bread is mostly carbohydrate whch contains no essential nutrition, it just metbolises into glucose which will put your blood sugar up and stop you burning fat. I don't eat any grain based foods at all.

Beans themselves are high in carbohydrates but mecause of the particular strucutre of the starch they break down more slowly. The realy bad thing is the sauce in which baked beans come, it contains sugar or 'modified starch' which is basically the same thing.

You'd be far better off with a few rashers of bacon or an egg or two or piece of fish if you want to loose weight.

Eryl - well known you have a dislike of carbs but many people cannot eat a higher fat diet. I would say - variety . The odd bread roll or baked beans as it depends also on portion size ,frequency and what other things people ate especially in the past . Same with the odd glass of wine . Restrict one group of foods and some would really feel miserable / controlled as mental health plays a great part in keeping on a food plan for life . I also exercise which at my age - 64 plays a great part in maintaining my weight . I don't eat read meat . I enjoy beans , pulses , seeds as well as the odd slice of bread and other carbs but still am able to maintain with 1/2kg fluctuation since 2018 . I don't cut out any group of foods I just moderate and enjoy . I take no medication and my health results from a recent check up were excellent .

It's not that I dislike cars but a scientific fact that the mitochondria (the power stations of the cells) can turn glucose or ketones into ATP which is what powers the cell, but because above a very low threshold high glucose is toxic to the body especially the blood cells and nerve cells, and it has a mechanism (called the Randle cycle) that (under the instruction of insulin) turns down and eventually turns off ketone burning. When ketone burning is fully off no amount of insulin will have an effect other than glycogen storing (which is limited) triglyceride forming which leads to fat storing. youtube.com/shorts/V6hZeHG6...

I appreciate your reply .Reading the majority of responses I get the impression that most of us don't look that deeply into science and simply want tips on a balanced general eating which won't drive us insane , that is working and that we can eat for life rather than prohibitive exclusions that most cannot sustain or budget for. This is why many drastic eating plans fail because most can only bare them for a few months as bang goes their social life , family life and they are literally driven bonkers . All my 5 children were given carbs . 2 run marathons and all aren't overweight . They are rarely at the Drs and they don't overthink food . Thanks for the link but I still - my own opinion think that a diet full of fat is no good for anyone with gastric issues , no gall bladder like me and talking to most of my friends wouldn't be achievable long term .I could link you to many videos from learned researchers stressing balance of food with obviously eat fresh , cook from scratch , portion control and think about UPF .

Back to your pain., could it be Diverticulitis? If so the remedies are almost the same. drberg.com/blog/do-i-avoid-...

Hi Eryl, not Diverticulitis. I caught a bad virus about 8 years ago and the docs put it down to Fybromyalgia. I had a few tests and it turned out I had a slight intolerance to wheat so went GF. However over the years I recovered so it wasn't FM and I ditched the GF. However I still can't tollerate a lote of wheat so eat bread very occasionally which was this week. That will be it for a few months again if at all. I had a heart attack Jan gone and then a bad fall at the end of April so with all the meds I am now on I have to watch what I eat more than ever but I am getting there slowly. I must get my weight down and keep it down. Thanks for your comments.

If it is fibromyagia then avoiding carbs should be routine. and if you've had your gallbladder out you should be taking bile salts. youtu.be/MVLbrjcP9PQ?si=qiJ...

Hiatus hernia is horrible . I endured it nearly 2 years and with a real fight after several unpleasant procedures I had day surgery - the best thing ever as omeprazole isn't great to take long term according to the surgeon who wasn't a fan of this medication for a long period of time . I couldn't actually digest any form of bread . It stuck in my throat but I wouldn't know what made you ill but try cutting out 1 then the other etc then you would know , Bacon also wasn't great for me as again it was hard to chew like any meat but eggs were fine .

I find laying on my left side helps reduce the reflux. Laying on the right side is bad and on my back sometimes ok and sometimes bad. If I think I’m having a bad spell, then I stop eating early to have a big gap before bedtime. Raising my head up also helps, but not always. Once the reflux hits it’s really too late for the omeprazole. It takes quite some time to kick in to stop more acid being pumped into the stomach. Take good care of yourself.

Yes my left side is best too. However I had a bad fall in April and injured my left side hip and leg but also my right shoulder collar bone and the back of my shoulder so difficult at first to sleep but its easing slowly. Yes I know Omeprozole is not good long term but the hospital prescribed at add to my heart attack meds. I need to ask about them long term your right thanks.

Hi Garden4me, sorry to read about you feeling poorly. It’s so difficult to determine what are ‘flares’ in our own bodies, and frustrating when identifying what is a trigger isn’t necessarily always a trigger. Beans and pulses are lovely, bread even more so, but both can exacerbate a health condition at times, and be tolerated at other times. It could be the double whammy of both at the same time that’s attributed to your discomfort. Baked beans from a can are fine for many, but try making your own and see if you have a similar reaction, as the canned variety has a lot of other stuff, including sugar, and homemade will be more natural. As others have said, it might be a process of elimination, and your body is unique and personal…one size ‘diet’ certainly does not fit all. I would avoid bacon though, if you eat it, or try and buy the nitrate free, as this is a known irritation to many health issues, tasty as it is. Good luck figuring it out 😊

glad you enjoyed your sourdough.

I really fancied some today, with roast tomatoes and a vegan buratta that I was given by a friend.

It’s nice toasted.
