Water retention due to weight

Hi Everyone, sadly I have water retention in my legs due to my weight gain and due to my job where I'm sat all day. The doctor has prescribed Furosemide 40mg. Has anyone else been on this? If so, how was your experience?Thank you

It works if the problem is solely due to water retention but should be discontinued as soon as the fluid has drained away. The need to know where the closest loos are is very important.

Hi Tyjelady thank you for commenting. Yes mine is purely due to fluid retention, I work at home so the toilet situ won't be a issue. (I hope). Have you been on furosemide yourself, what was your experience with side effects like? Apart from the constant urination, of course.

I have only had Furosemide when hospitalised and mine was due to fluid build up round the heart and was intravenously. However I had no side effects but was on restricted fluids and did lose an average of 2lb. per day. Good luck.

Hi Crystal89,

I've never taken Furosamide myself, but have known several people that have. This is what the NHS says about it nhs.uk/medicines/furosemide... but to be honest, the only 'side effect' I've witnessed, is the frequency of micturition.

I would suggest that you set hourly alarms on your phone, to remind you to get up and walk for 5 mins.

Carbohydrates and salty food can cause fluid retention, so maybe address those aspects of your diet.

Both suggestions should help with the fluid retention and weight loss.

Hello there!

I can completely sympathise with you. I put on 4kg in a week with fluid retention.

I have put support knee high socks on, reduced my salt and sugar intake and tried to walk and flex my feet regularly and I lost it again in a couple of days.

Did spend a lot of time in the loo though!!

Morning and Hi mountain mania I'm the same when taking Diuretic first thing I'm living in toilet for at least 2 hour's It definitely puts weight on. I've got lymphodema on both lower leg's the swelling seems to come and go, is that the same as you? I have support socks up to below knee as well and have intensive hydromol cream to rub on to moisturise affected area once a day, used to be twice swelling still there but not as bad at its worst, my GP told me to move or exercise Hope you managing OK

Hello Crystal89 I also have water retention due to lymphodema in both lower legs so GP gives strong Diuretic tablets so for first 2 hour's I need to be near a toilet 🚻 they do help caled Bumetanide but getting on weighing scales is a waist of time mostly, but exercise twice per week down Gym feel a little fitter and better within myself but scales hardly move watching what I eat, I don't know if your medication the same family group as what I take first thing in the morning but it must be a Diuretic I think? How long have you had this... Myself since 2017 my GP told me if can't exercise I'm to move or walk at least if they swell, but currently they seem to be holding ok! Be nice to interact about how you doing. 10mg I take soon as I get up, wishing you all the best" Does your water retention comes and go..

You're maybe best to avoid the scales, then. You can judge your weight by how your clothes fit, your energy levels etc - you'll know what are the markers for you

Yes I rarely pop on my smart scales at home as it fluctuates quite a lot from one week to another, Yes I feel good after exercise and putting jeans on is a tell tale sign, although how ever hard I workout and watch what I'm consuming the weight doesn't go below what I call bottom line, just feel more energetic.
