Names and Places

2019 was a terrible year for me. My life and business collapsed and I was in despair at a total loss. At a particularly low point, I happened upon a Quaker Meeting House and decided to pop in to see what was going on. I was welcomed as a friend and ushered into a room where I sat in silence with 25 or so others for an hour or so. A silence occasionally broken by someone standing up and speaking on some insight that had been gleaned from the silence. I left feeling better as if a stone having been lifted.

At one of these meetings, I decided I needed to write a book; an examen of my life and how I had got to where I was. After all, it was Socrates who said “The unexamined life is not worth living”.

So, I began to write. The book morphed into something rather different and far more mysterious but that is for another day. The point of this post is twofold. Firstly, that if we sit with non-judgmental others and bask in their compassion some form of healing takes place. Secondly, as I wrote my examen, I did a list of every place I had lived in during my life. As I reflected on the name of each house, each seemed to offer a clear message of what lay before me. It was uncanny.

So, I am wondering do the names of the places you have lived or been offer any insights to you? If so, pray tell.

Hi TheGalician and welcome back to the Weight Loss Forum.

It's interesting that you chose to post about life. We've just had another post very similar, more secular and weight loss related.

May I remind you of our Daily Diary where it's quite fun to share our plans for the next day. The weekly weigh ins are still being followed by a lot of our members. here's the link to the pinned posts where you will find the links to all of our regular Weight Loss related posts.

Dear Tabby, I’m not sure the post is similar since it essentially deals with two different points seen from a wholly different perspective. I may well have pressed the wrong button since your response seems to suggest that my points are not relevant to weight issues since I do not reference them specifically. I am happy to defer to your greater knowledge.

Hey TG, your post is really interesting, and I'm not trying to be funny when I tell you that the first thing that popped into my mind, in reply to your Q was: when I was little, my home was on Battenberg Avenue, and now, half a century later, I've got a thing about the cake. Not to eat it - it's far too sweet and I have to be gluten- free now.. but something about the colours and the design.. dunno..

A couple of years ago, I saw this charming little teaset in a charity shop. It was painted Battenberg style and I wanted to buy it soo much!! It was so beautiful. But I had nowhere to put it and couldn't bear the thought of buying it, just to keep in a cupboard..Anyway, I know this is not really what you were asking for, but it's just always been a curiosity to me why I like that design so much. Battenberg isn't the only pretty looking cake after all. Kipling's French Fancies for example, do nothing for my soul 😄

Oh I love Battenberg Lilac-Angel :) sorry to say they have surely played a part in me ending up on the weight loss forum!! :) :) Our whole family loves them and my brother, who is a superb baker, sometimes makes Battenberg in different colours for special occasions such as an orange black one at Halloween or a Christmas one, as well as the classic one of course.

I could scoff a whole Mr Kipling so no wonder I had to go low carb for my health :) :) :)

He adds extra marzipan decorations, he did an autumn one with little marzipan pumpkins along the top. It was so cute! And of course since we all love the marzipan the whole family enjoys the extra bits, he has to do enough so we don't squabble over who got more extras! :)

Someone was posting the other day about making low carb marzipan and I made a mental note to give it a go.

It is good to hear of the compassion and non judgmental welcome of the Quakers :)

I have thought of all the places I have lived - quite a few but none of the names seem to be significant. My current address involves a Ferry, have I been on a journey? maybe :)

Another cool Quaker fact: all the first chocolate makers were Quakers and they really looked after their workers, even building them a clean affordable community to live in; Bournville being probably the most well-known

Interesting, I didn't know that, or maybe I just forgot, because I did visit the Cadbury factory once so I should know the history. Probably I was paying too much attention to the chocolate at the time :)

Ohh what a fab day out! 🍫🍫🍫My closest experience was a visit to John Bull's rock factory at the seaside as a kid. It was pretty cool

Honestly it was, especially since my poor daughter that I went with suddenly didn't feel well, and I ate all her free samples and treats as well as my own. I could go in to detail but I seems to be heading down a road that is not very diet friendly :) :) :) I remember seeing rock being rolled on childhood holidays, fun times :)
