Suggestions for plant based diet
I'm afraid I can't help you with a plant based diet, energy1, but you may find this interesting dietdoctor.com/low-carb/ben...
It depends what you mean by "plant based". The term seems to have been co-opted by the vegans to mean, well, vegan. However LCHF (see moreless's post) is also a plant-based diet, as are many 'traditional', whole-foods diets. They just happen to include some animal products - for health, taste, or both.
If you want to go vegan, I'm not entirely sure if this is helpful for IBS, but of course there's no harm in trying. Just make sure you take B12 supplements.
Hi, we’ve been vegetarian for decades & tried veganism this year — found switching from dairy to unsweetened oat/ almond milk And switching from butter to vegan spread beneficial. Try a few & see what you prefer. For us, vegan cheese alternatives haven’t really worked, so we do flat breads with nice veggie toppings & things like hummus rather than trying to replicate pizzas! just upping the amount of fresh veg & salad really helps. We also go for one pot meals a lot, with veg & rice/ pasta etc & use nice herb blends like harissa, all very tasty 😊
Hi and welcome, MrsBradyOldLady
If you're here to lose weight, all of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.
We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.
Wishing you all the best
If you want to go plant based, I think that's what you should do. Eat whole, natural plant foods. You will have to supplement I believe, to get some B vitamins.
I am very concerned with what will happen to the health of people who replace meat, dairy and eggs with industrial products that manipulate plants to be so removed from their natural form they resemble animals or animal products. It seems likely that the obesity and diabetes epidemics stem from ultra-processed foods, and a lot of the vegan foods are ultra-processed. The word vegan gives them an unearned health halo.
I now read the ingredients of anything I buy in a packet, and if cheese contains much more than milk, salt and rennet, I am not buying it. Thus I found the ingredients on the above mentioned "cheese" quite shocking.
INGREDIENTS: Water, Coconut Oil (20%), Modified Potato Starch, Caramelised Red Onion Chutney (8%) (Red Onion, Sugar, Red Wine Vinegar, Water, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Black Pepper), Maize Starch, Gluten Free Oat Fibre, Modified Maize Starch, Thickeners: Carrageenan, Guar Gum; Flavouring, Salt, Yeast Extract, Red Onion, Spirit Vinegar, Acidity Regulators: Lactic Acid, Sodium lactate; Colour: Mixed Carotenes.
I would not make that a regular part of my diet, and I don't believe eating that instead of cheese will make you healthier; quite the opposite, in fact.
