Heart failure diet needed

Hi i am Carole a 71 year old nurse who is still working part time.

I have rheumatoid arthritis which I struggle with on a daily basis but it's not going to improve so I just carry on. I am overweight because I find exercise difficult with all my disabilities, but yesterday I was diagnosed with medium risk heart failure. I am awaiting appointments for various tests and yet more drugs. The one thing I can do in the meantime is to loose weight I am about 20ks over my desired weight. I have done lots of research into healthy heart eating and I am very motivated.

Any help or views would be very welcome.

Hi and welcome Carole :)

I wouldn't presume to offer anyone in your position any advice, I couldn't possibly be more clued up than you :) I can say, though, that this community is extremely friendly and supportive and your journey will be a happier one for being a member of it :)

Take a look at the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen (bottom, if you're using a mobile) and have a look at the Welcome Newbies thread, it has a link to the NHS 12 week plan, which is a guide to healthy living, rather that a specific diet plan.

Consider joining any, or all, of our challenges, as they're fun and motivating.

Join us for the monday group weigh-in. If you follow Zest , you'll be notified when she posts the thread. However, the latest thread can always be found in the events section, to the right of the home page.

Be active on the forum, as that's where we exchange ideas and get our daily dose of motivation and inspiration :)

Wishing you all the very best :)

Hello iamanurse

I agree that weight loss would be an excellent place to start 😊 I follow a plan very similar to the British Heart Foundation plan, have a look on their website for more info, it may be useful to you as its specific for heart problems, although the eating plan suits anybody 😊

Good luck, it's never easy waiting for test results or doctor appointments 😕

Hi Iamanurse

Perhaps think back to what people used to eat in the days before 'low-fat' and other junk food? Many modern packaged foods are full of sugar and it is very easy to end up eating too much. Breakfast cereals are often loaded with sugar, as are 'low-fat' foods.

Apart from the 12 week plan, or the British Heart foundation diet, have a look at the Meditteranean diet which is recommended in the NICE guidelines. Olive oil is very heart healthy.

I know exactly how you feel, I am 64 have arthritis, brittle asthma, bronchiectasis and now heart failure, exercise is so difficult as I cannot walk to the bathroom with being out of breath! I have reduced the amount of food I eat but still find it hard to maintain a diet as my appetite is not the best?

Not what you're looking for?
