Yep, that’s my first goal right there in the title!
Morning everyone, I was here a few years back but life took a nasty turn and continued until November 2019. As many of you can testify too such things take a toll on health and physical and mental wellbeing. So I piled on the weight-4stone, prediabetic, high cholesterol, dependency on alcohol, high blood pressure, severe anxiety etc etc.
2020 came in and the inherent need to be healthy in mind and body came with it. So after a shaky start I’m now the proud loser of 6lbs, I’m aiming for another ‘dry’ month and already my activity level has gone up one notch.
Wonder Woman here I come 😁

Apologies if I'm telling you something you already know but, with pre-diabetes, it's not about "cutting back" it's about changing what you eat. Basically, diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, so that's where you need to focus your attention. The good news is it can be reversed.
There are many members of the forum who opt for a low carbohydrate, high fat diet because it's enjoyable and helps with appetite and weight loss, as well as those who see the results for their diabetes.
The forum is full of information and support. A good place to start is by joining a weekly weigh in and using the Daily Diary where members share their meal plans. You'll find all you need in our Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope we'll see you joining in around the forum
I see Tiggerr has pointed you to the DrinkLess club. It's been very popular.
I do hope you'll make a real change. If you haven't given the low carb high fat approach, it's well worth doing. I'd say give it a go, wholeheartedly, for a month, along with coming here every day for a few minutes' chat (not just lurking 😁 ) and see how you feel.
Do you know, it’s the first time I’ve ever ‘said’ I’m alcohol dependent. I’ve known it for some time but I was kidding myself. And to prove my point to myself that little alcohol ogre sits on my shoulder regularly saying ‘go on go on go on, have another drink ‘ (in a father Ted accent too) But I also know that I’ve smashed the ogres nuts in and carried on without when it’s raised it’s big fat noggin. I can do this *what a champ* 😇
I had to have a serious falling out with alcohol, a year or so before I joined the forum. It had just become too much of a daily habit. I now have a couple of drinks a week but still would have no control with a bottle in the house
Ha! I feel your pain...I have a no-alcohol-house for that very same reason. Over time I’m sure the habit of going straight for the san pelligrino bottle will crush the old ‘must have a wine’ habit that dominated life for far too long. And what a waste of money eh!?
Great going on your weight loss to date and your dry Jan. From one alcohol dependent to another, you might want to join in here... healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...... It's a place for anyone who is interested in drinking less.
Thanks Tiggerr...I found my will power somewhere these last few weeks. It was already there having smashed the smoking demons! I just lost it temporarily under a pie or something.
If you "slim smart" weight loss is not so hard! It is not all about motivation and masochism.
Some of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Snacking All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:
Thanks S11m. I’ve been doing low carb (no potatoes, bread, pasta, rice) lots of greens and protein, no processed food for the last few weeks and feel considerably different than usual. Lost the bloated belly, more energy etc. I need to re read that post though just so I don’t get stale in my dieting and fall off the wagon.
It’s hard to get your head around the ‘eat more fat’ after years of being told give up butter cheese avocado etc etc. But I have all those liberally along with eggs, fatty fish, crispy bacon etc. Currently watching keto vids on you tube! How life has changed 😬
Sounds like you're eating pretty well then. All my faves there, then there's cream that I have with berries for pudding every evening plus nuts, ribeye, lamb etc... (not all every night ).
Well done! Sometimes we have to be in right place to make a change. And a long comes a time when we are ready. This is your time (and mine as it happens). I’m also low carbing in 2020. I’d switched to whole grains a couple of times in the past, but frankly. I’m too impatient to continue losing at 1/2 pound a month... It’s fab that there’s so much great blurb on the internet, but I might have reached saturation point with videos by doctors with Swedish American accents!
