Christmas fun and overeating

I seem to have eaten a lot more than I should over the Christmas celebrations. I have put on 4 pounds and feel like I have eaten poor food choices such as chocolates, cakes and trifle. My mum bless her heart with all the best intentions loves to offer lots of party food and I find it hard to resist. Today I resumed my jog/walk routine and had a healthy salad for lunch but then I reached for the chocolates and toffee popcorn. I hope to get back on track today but my willpower is not too good at the moment....

Don't worry, Janechic, you're no different to anyone else. By the end of January, all vestiges of Christmas will be past :)

Hi, Janechic

I ate "plenty" for Christmas lunch - but I have not eaten since, and I am back at my target weight.

I might have done a longer fast, but my son is meeting me for lunch tomorrow, so it will only be a 68-hour fast.

Ok so tell me to get stuffed if you like S11m, but are you getting addicted to fasting?

For Janechic - you may find that the 4lbs is quite a bit of water retention as party food can make us retain water. It’s unlikely to be 4lbs of actual fat.

sorry slim_for_good but the phrase 'get stuffed' did me make smile under the circumstances :) I fear I have also put on 4 lbs but I will get things back under control ASAP :) just got to get through New Year and hubby's birthday first......

I only hope you are right about the water retention :)

I think I have low risk of anorexia, and, I think, being addicted to fasting is better than being addicted to any food?

in reply toS11m

Ok! Just thought I’d ask. 🤣

Er....not necessarily!

I was a kilo above my target weight 20 hours after Christmas lunch, and a Kilo under after 68 hours.

Eating nothing for 68 hours helps - but I would suggest that you do not try a longer fast before spending a few weeks getting "fat-adapted". See:

Think I’m going to have Christmas Pud as my last Christmas 🎄 food tomorrow then back to the regime :)

I’ve put 4lb on! But managed to avoid choc!

It's easily done. But I find it's easy to get rid of to when normal life resumes.

You are not alone, draw a line under it and start again.

Good luck.

Don't fret over it. It's Christmas, and the whole point of any celebration is to overindulge. As long as you get back to your routine, all is well.

If you found that your "healthy salad" had you reaching for the popcorn, it's almost certainly because it was an inadequate meal. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to walk around permanently hungry; it doesn't work like that.

Make sure that, when you have (say) a salad, you've included something that (a) provides energy in a non-fattening form and (b) is inherently satisfying. Practically speaking, that means including some fat and protein. So you want to have some eggs, or some prawns, ham, or chicken (cooked with the skin on - no lean chicken breast!), and some cream- or oil-based dressing such as mayonnaise or Ranch. Avoid low-fat dressings like the plague; they're invariably full of sugar and chemicals. And make sure you have adequate portions! If your serving of salad wasn't enough to make you feel full, eat more of it. You'll then feel less inclined to fill the gap with popcorn.

Thank you for your reply. I am taking your advice. I definitely need to eat more protein with some fat with salad and good portion size. I don't want to be hungry and end up obsessing about food.

I jog regularly and I am very slowly losing weight being mindful of what I eat. I overindulge when I don't eat enough and get cravy and hungry for carbs and chocolate. Your advice is just right. Thanks again

I know I've put on about 5lbs but it is hard not to at Christmas. I'm sure you & I will get back on track in the new year.
