I'm looking for recipes to try out.

Something vegetarian, little mess but saucy and satisfying.

I'm finding myself drawn to dishes heavy in carbs so preferably something more on the nutritious side.

I came across this which looks delicious but I'm not too keen on the flavour of korma 😕 cookingandme.com/2015/12/29...

If anyone has any recipes to share, please do. The more the merrier 😊

I made this curry some time ago and it was really good, veggie curry if a curry is something you fancy??

Mmm that does sound nice and I like the fresh kick of ginger in food. Will give it a go, thanks 😊.

I'm just looking for any new, world food recipes to try.

Is it freezable BTW?

in reply toMintTeaMascara

Yes, i made a big batch when i did it and froze some :)

Thanks - just found this as well which look tasty - allrecipes.com/recipe/26800... - seems a bit heavy on the chilli 🥵

in reply toMintTeaMascara

LOL - depends on how hot / spicy you like currys!! 2 teaspoons would be about right for me, 1 wouldn't be enough but 3 would be too many!!

I prefer to use fresh chillies in recipes rather than powder though - maybe you could add 1 tsp powder and half / 1 fresh red chilli to get a balance?

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply to

There's two teaspoons of powder and a fresh chilli and chilli jam 😬

The way to go would be to add half and add more at the end to taste?

in reply toMintTeaMascara

Yes, you could leave the chili jam out or some of the fresh chilli out and then add at the end. I wouldn't add any more powder at the end as i think it would need cooking out a bit.

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply to

Yh okay so if I want it mild to medium - ⅔ powder and ½ a fresh chilli would be right?

I also do most pasta type sauces with shredded steamed cabbage instead of pasta which works very well.

If it’s a traditional meat and two veg type meals I just have three veg and no potatoes 😊

For general recipe inspiration the BBC GoodFood website takes some beating

A pasta type sauce with a pasta substitute does sound nice and I'll have a look through :) thanks again

A brilliant cook book is Hairy Dieters, they give alternatives to our favourite calorific dishes

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toBigFoodie

Thanks :) - just found this one hairybikers.com/recipes/vie... - looks really fattening but might give it a go with salmon instead, at some point. It looks delicious

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministrator2 stone in reply toMintTeaMascara

If you want to make it less fattening, cut out the pastry and do it as a crustless quiche. It's the pastry that's fattening, not any of the filling

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toBridgeGirl

Thanks. Substituting salmon is just for preference as I don't eat bacon.

I love a stodgy meal sometimes, so will probably try it as it is one week I've not had much fat :)

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministrator2 stone in reply toMintTeaMascara

Ah, I see, it's bacon you're avoiding, not healthy fats :)

Hello and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum BigFoodie 😊

Hairy Dieters are good aren’t they? (Although you won’t convince me that a layered bake made with leeks is as good as lasagne 😂)

If you haven’t already then please see Pinned Posts here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

especially the Welcome Newbies and the Security Post,

please read it carefully and just ask if you have any questions.

Best wishes in your weight loss journey

Indigo 😊

in reply toIndigoBlue61

I'm with you IndigoBlue61 - as much as anything looks good such as leeks / aubergine used in lasagne as a replacement for the pasta sheets ... you'll never convert me to making a lasagne without pasta in it!! :D

I’d rather have a smaller portion of the real thing!! Lol 😂

It wasn't until I stopped eating pasta, that I realised I don't even like pasta! :D

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply tomoreless

😁 I don't think I could ever stop liking pasta - it was a staple growing up - definitely is better to keep it to a minimum though I think

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply toMintTeaMascara

I was the same with pasta, potato and rice, but I never eat any of them now and never miss them. I much prefer to have a variety of different veg, which are tastier and lighter :)

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply tomoreless

I don't think I could ever completely cut it out but you must of really turned your diet around the better. Kudos.

Yh I agree with you about it being better to have a variety of veg and about it being lighter and easier on the tummy.

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministrator2 stone in reply toMintTeaMascara

I'm with moreless. I could never have imagined living without bread and potatoes after 60+ years of meals built around these staples but I can't remember now when I last bought them. Not quite true as I had visitors recently and bought some potatoes for them and bread for toast at breakfast - ended up throwing most of it away, which is dreadful.

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toBridgeGirl

I guess it's each to their own. It's amazing how much of a difference you've made to your diet.

I've made the mistake of completely cutting sugar out of my diet before and it's difficult to keep it to a minimum when it's so addictive, but personally I'd never cut carbs or sugar completely out. I'd aim for them to be as low and balanced as possible, but I know that's not for everyone :)

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministrator2 stone in reply toMintTeaMascara

Me too. I've not cut carbs out completely (not sure you can) I just get them from veg and fruit now.

That doesn't mean I don't ever have something sweet: I had a gorgeous slice of cake this afternoon with friends at a cafe. I just don't have any of that stuff in the house so it truly is an exception. I think, for me, it was addictive when I fed the addiction, and I've no doubt it could become so again, if I allowed it to

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toBridgeGirl

😊 That definitely sounds like a good plan

I’d recommend absolutely anything from Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s ‘Much More Veg’, all recipes vegan, and all the veggie recipes in Yotam Ottolenghi’s ‘Ottolenghi Simple’. I’m currently having a happy Sunday morning planning my week with them!

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toEleanorba

Nice 😊 happy Sunday morning! And thanks - I'm going to check and see if I can find anything of theirs on-line.

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toEleanorba

Is this it? rivercottage.net/recipes-in...

Some of these recipes look delicious - ottolenghi.co.uk/recipes there's a few from both I could try but it looks a bit advanced for me at this stage :)

Eleanorba profile image
EleanorbaMaintainer in reply toMintTeaMascara

That first one is definitely Hugh F-W and might have some stuff from the most recent book. Ditto Ottolenghi but it’s definitely worth checking out the ‘Simple’ book for recipes that don’t involve a day’s shopping before you make them!

Will try and check it out :) thanks

Please look at some of my recipes in the Vegetarian menu tab - I am not vegetarian, but enjoy and try to eat meat free as much as we can! I also try to eat reduced processed carbs.

That was one of my "I don't likes" but buried in here I don't think you'd notice it. However, when I was still convinced I didn't like it, I substituted a leek

MintTeaMascara profile image
MintTeaMascaraHealthy BMI in reply toBridgeGirl

I actually want to eat it funnily enough. My son loves it raw with hummus but I never buy it. I remember watching a program years ago saying if you try foods you don't like enough times you eventually like them, so I always make it a habit to try anything healthy.
