Hello and welcome, zippp :)

You're right, we're all in the same boat, some have paddled further than others but we're all going in the same direction so you're in good company.

Here are my tips

1. Whatever you tried before, it didn't work - and by "work" I mean set you up with a way of eating to keep your weight at the right level for you, for good: try something different this time: these posts might help

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

2. Get involved here on a daily basis, no need to post, read, chat to people, ask questions, encourage others - it will all work in your favour: particularly, join a weigh in team and use the Daily Diary for meal planning and sharing ideas: more information here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

There's a lot going on and all the information you need is in our Welcome post under Pinned Posts. You will have been given the link with your welcome message and I've tagged you there so do check it out.

Wishing you success in turning things round and reaching your goal :)

hi ur so sweet to reply so fast...so encouraging! i was just wondering if you have ever heard that staying off bread can keep your weight down

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministrator2 stone in reply tozippp

Definitely! When you have time to read through the links I've given you, you'll start to understand why.

I was the bread and potato queen a couple of years ago. Now, I can't remember when I last bought bread. I've had it occasionally when I've been on holiday but I have no plans to buy it.

We've been told for so long that fat was what caused us to put on weight. It was an eye-opener to me to find it was carbohydrates that caused the problem. It's not just about sugar (which we all know is a problem) but about those foods that convert to high levels of sugar in the blood stream.

You might find these interesting. The second is one of a series, The Skinny on Obesity. You can find them all on YouTube, they're only short and they'll give you a lot to think about

thanks.. so what do you say are the best foods to stick to? can you give me a rough idea of what you think is a good daily food plan? especially for those of us that get up late so arent up for breakfast!!!

Take yourself over to the Daily Diary. People will be happy to answer any questions. Here's the link to today's but it's only just got going so there'll be more chat in an hour or two. healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

I don't eat breakfast, either. I have a couple of coffees in the morning, with cream. My first meal is often egg based - omelette or frittata with any sort of filling, plus some veg - I find green veg goes with egg so spinach, courgette, cabbage.

My evening meal varies. Sometimes it's just veg e.g. veg curry or cauliflower cheese with broccoli and other veg. Sometimes I have meat or fish with veg. I've taken ideas from the dietdoctor site dietdoctor.com/ but mainly I just cobble things together. I rarely eat between meals but if I'm getting hungry and my meal is going to take a while, I'll have some nuts or a piece of cheese. I don't have bread, potatoes, rice or pasta, and I don't miss them.

Start following the Daily Diary and join in when you're ready to post your plans. You'll find recipes in Pinned Posts. This will help you find them healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hello zippp. I agree with BridgeGirl and S11m.

Have you checked out the daily diary, there will be a link in your welcome message.

Its the best place to start to get a feel for what folk are eating and when they are eating it! Its a great place for support every day.

There is no set plan. So some people cut out or cut down on carbohydrates and increase their intake of natural fats, like olive oil, butter and cream. Others watch the calories.

Its important not to look for quick fixes but something which will sustain you for ever.

I’ve successfully lost weight several times but then I relax!

I’ve just spent two days with two friends. They eat less than half as much as me and walk for at least an hour a day, most days. They drink wine, eat cake and chocolates but have small helpings! We have to break the HABIT of overeating until it comes naturally. So so easy to lose the plot.

Hello, Capitaine52, and welcome to the forum :)

You're right there. Eating in order to lose weight and then going back to eating "normally" (the definition of dieting) just doesn't work. We need to find a new "normal".

This is a good explanation of why it gets more difficult to lose weight as we get older healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and this offers a new approach phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

I've tagged you in the Newbie Welcome post so drop in there to see what's on offer and how to find your way around. I recommend joining a weekly weigh in on the day of your choice, and using the Daily Diary to share your meal plans and pick up ideas.

Other than that, come here as often as you can, read, ask questions, join in activities and support others - it will all pay off for you :)

Hi, zippp , Welcome.

Exercise helps... but it is possible to lose weight without it.

It is better to succeed slowly - and keep the weight off!

Many of us here find that what works is a combination of The Low Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Eating All Day AKA Intermittent Fasting (IF). See:

I agree with what others replied. Do not aim for quick fix.

Learn awareness.

Look up recipes, check Daily Diary.

Are you able to exercise?

How much weight do you want to lose?

I also suggest you start with cutting down carbohydrates.

i want to lose about 5stone....... yes a large amount! not great at exercise but really need to get started... basics i can for sure do. need to get my fitness levels up...slow and steady will win.... wondering if i do a week with no carbs at all if it will give me a head start

Don’t eat sugar. Or anything with sugar - including ‘natural’ sugar in it. Next on the list not to eat would be bread (rye is ok), anything made of wheat, pasta, white rice & potatoes. Stick to that and I absolutely promise you will lose weight. Don’t be afraid of red meat & full fat dairy.

what on earth do you eat for a week if you eat no sugars at all????

elliebath profile image

You can eat loads of things without sugar ! If you're not vegetarian then : meat, fish, poultry, eggs, butter, cheese, cream, fish, nuts, lots more colourful veg.... They dont have to be plain, add cream to your coffee, add butter or cheese to vegetables, soups and sauces , have brunch of bacon eggs, mushrooms tomatoes but skip the toast, have delicious omelettes filled with colourful veggies &cheese, have berries and cream for dessert or a few squares of very dark chocolate ... and the bonus is YOU WON'T GO HUNGRY as natural fats are more filling than those empty flour or sugar foods.. The links above from BridgeGirl will give you lots of tips.

It can take some getting your head around but look at the list Elliebath and Slim-for-good gave you, there are loads of alternatives 😊

Ah ha. I think you have your clue to your diet challenges if you can’t imagine a diet without sugars. Diet doctor website can give you ideas as well as anything on here labelled LCHF. Personally I find you can lose weight with some carbs, so long as they are very slow release energy including brown & wild rice, oats, spelt, buckwheat, pulses. If you don’t cook now, you will need to start/learn...

Breakfast ideas

- berries, full fat Greek yoghurt, nuts & seeds

- no sugar muesli with full fat milk - oats no wheat

- any sort of eggs

- bacon, sausages, mushrooms & grilled tomatoes

- smashed avocado on rye toast

Lunch ideas

- chunky soups - home made as shop ones have sugar

- salad with lots of chicken/ham/feta cheese/prawns

Snack ideas

- unsalted nuts (everyone eats too many of the salted kind)

- oatcakes & rye crackers - check the ingredients for no sugar & no wheat

- pieces of roast chicken/ham/cheese

- greek yoghurt

- hummus & carrot sticks

Supper ideas

- chilli/bolognaise, home made with wild rice (not a bucketful) and loads of green vegetables. Quite a few people skip the rice & have it on a bed of cauliflower chopped very small (cauli rice) or courgettes on strips (courgette noodles)

- big slab of chicken breast/salmon with a huge pile of cooked vegetables
