At 56 I weigh 127kg or 20stone and have been referred for surgery. I could cry but I won't as I really want to fight this weight loss journey and am going to try the calorie/exercise way. I have just spent time on this NHS site sorting out what my BMI is what calorie intake I should have and how to enjoy this rather than see it as an arduous task. I will aim to lose 5 stone in a year (that's 2lb a week approx.) I'm aiming for the 150 minutes moderate exercise a week - I have a history of depression and anxiety BUT I quite like dancing so will put the tunes on and dance away, along with dog walk and water aerobics I reckon! (Not all together)
Bread is my weakness and I have to keep it in as have students I host/feed....
My recliner settee is another weakness!
This is a long term plan and won't happen quickly...just I pray I can avoid surgery!!
Thanks for being there for me and I'll try to give support too

Hi maggied-you are in the right place and everyone will be behind you 100%-you sound determined and i'm sure you can do this. the slow approach is definately the best and I am very happy if I do 1lb weekly-good luck
I can feel the despair in your voice, but please try to be positive. Lots of people have lost a lot of weight with the support of this forum. I notice you are not new to dieting but this time I agree with you, it needs to be an enjoyable journey, and t he best advice I can give is to eat enough. As I think you’re aware, 1400 calorie target suggested is a just generic amount, please check your own personal calorie target as it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the biggest cause of weight loss failure
What you eat is also important and I have found as I get older that sugar and carbohydrates cause issue. Maybe read this for a fuller explanation about why a lower carbohydrate eating plan may be more suitable healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hello maggied264 I can hear how much you really want this and I’m sure that will help you succeed. If you can lose the weight to avoid surgery then what better reason to give it your all.
I’ve got about 5 stones to lose so, like you, I know this is going to take a while but it’s not a race. Let’s do this 😊
Take your time reading the links you’ve been given, and join in here as much as possible - make that part of your ‘ getting healthy ‘ plan. If you’re counting calories, make good use of your allowance, which will be quite generous
Hi, Maggied, just felt it might be useful on the bread issue to keep it in the freezer and only remove it as you need it if that's a possibility for you. I have stopped buying my usual wholemeal granary loaf which I love the taste of as the flavour isn't as good after freezing. Instead I buy a small sliced wholemeal which I keep in the freezer. I find this helps me to lower my carb intake, so I would recommend anyone to try it. I am usually an absolute fiend for breadwhen not trying to lose weight and I find it's easier to resist and keep track of this way.
Well done for putting bread in the freezer, although it doesn't take long to defrost a slice or two it's out of sight and the tantalising aroma isn't an issue either. You just need to read and absorb all the other information, decide on a Weigh-in day and use the Daily Diary to record food plans. Before you know it that excess weight will be coming off. Wishing you all the best with your change of lifestyle!
hi 🙋 I like the sound of dancing, dog walks and aqua workouts. All things I'd enjoy doing. How about "recliner date nights!" Where you indulge when you have earned it through your exercise as planned? We really can't cut out all our comfort buddies. I know on one TV programme they threw out the recliner and replaced it with a treadmill, how rude! 😈 Good Luck.
Love the idea of the treadmill, though my 2 dogs would not be able to cuddle up! (though they could get fit too....) Thank you for your idea of datenight
I too weighed 20st and was referred for surgery I was sent on a nutritional course for 6 weeks and lost 6 kilos then I had to do 6 weeks on my own and lost a further 5 kilos the nutritionist said I was on my for 3 months after which I would see the surgeon and a decision would be made about having surgery.
